It Wasn't a Mistake

~~~Astrid's POV~~~
"What am I doing here?"  I hissed, ducking out of the way as some kid ran past me trying to catch up to his best friend.
"Hey Astrid!  Why don't you try to dance a little?"
I turned towards the sound of the voice and found none other than Katy.  Though she wasn't facing me, she was facing...  Well, me.  She was standing before the actual Astrid that was in the prom.  With a start, I realized that I was but a mirage.  Which made sense since this was a memory.
I studied...  Myself.  Past!Astrid seemed downright miserable, and I could remember why.  That was the month after my father left my mother.  I was still reeling in the emotions left behind by his abandonment.
I was sad, I was hurt, I was angry.  But most of all, I was betrayed.  How could he abandon us?  He had promised that he loved us!
I had spent weeks locked in my room.  In a sad attempt to get me to liven up, Katy dragged me to the senior prom.
And I absolutely hated it.
Upon realizing that I wanted nothing to do with that place, Katy sat down beside me and grabbed one of my hands in her own.
"Look, Astrid, I'm so sorry for bringing you here.  Your mom and I have been so worried lately, you haven't been talking to us and it's just...  I thought maybe the music, the lively atmosphere would help."  Katy explained.  Past!Astrid merely looked away and grunted.
"Maybe next time you'll listen to me when I tell you I don't want to do something."  Past!Astrid muttered, glaring into space.  I shook my head in disappointment.  I was such a brat.
"Do you want me to drive you home?"  Katy offered.  Past!Astrid merely shook her head and remained quiet.  Katy sighed and put a hand on Past!Astrid's shoulder.  "I'll be around, if you want to leave don't hesitate to drag me out of here."
There was no reply and Katy disappeared into the crowd.  As soon as she disappeared, Past!Astrid shot to her feet and left the party.  Once she was outside, she took off her heels and began to walk home.
I followed her quietly, even though I knew what was going to happen.  She was going to be mugged.  They would slash the palm of her hand, she would throw her heels at them and she would run to the house.  That was what happened last time, that's what was going to happen now.
While Past!Astrid walked, I did my best to stop her and form any kind of interaction.  But she couldn't hear me.  I pouted and crossed my arms, obviously disgruntled.  Then, suddenly, I heard a snarl behind me.
Snarl?
Past!Astrid froze and turned around very slowly, I did the exact same.  Some things just wouldn't change.
The was a wolf standing on front of us.  It was huge, abnormally so.  It's white pelt was tainted silver by the moonlight.  It's eyes were blue, and they were absolutely vicious.
"Holy shit."  Past!Astrid muttered, reaching into her purse for her phone, but the wolf pounced.
Me being me, my first reaction was to try and get the wolf off of her.  So I just tried to shove it off, but as soon as I got close to it my hands turned to smoke.  But if I backed off, I was corporeal again.
"Shit. Shit. Shit."  Past!Astrid repeated, obviously panicked.  She grabbed her heels and smashed them against the side of the wolf's snout.
Yup...  Some things never change.
The wolf whined and backed off.  Past!Astrid ran off into the woods.
I don't remember this part.
After glancing at the wolf one last time, I followed her.  She ran and ran, not once faltering to breathe.  Until...
Pixies?
These small fairylike creatures began flying around her, they seemed alarmed, and they wanted her to stop.  Past!Astrid skidded to a halt.
"Quick!  Quick, take my hand."  One of the creatured extended her hand towards Past!Astrid.  She carefully took the creature's hand.
Suddenly, we were in...  The empty.  There was literally nothing as far as the eye could see.  Everything was white.  Blindingly so.  Then a chair appeared and the pixies forced Past!Astrid to sit.
"Wait, what-"  She began to ask, but her voice faltered when she saw the three human sized fairies standing before her.  One male, two female.
"Astrid Grace.  Daughter of Joseph and Katherine Grace."  The male fairy began, I scowled.
"Kline.  Astrid Kline.  Daughter of Katherine Kline."  I clarified.  Of course, he couldn't hear me.  And since Past!Astrid was still going as Grace, she nodded.
"You have been chosen to be the vessel for the spirit of the Protector."  The male said.  "The Protector's soul will be bonded with your own until you become one."  The younger looking female stepped forward, the male kept speaking.  "Your duty is to protect those that are different, special.  You will find Slenderman's mansion, and you will tell him what you are.  You will protect them."
Past!Astrid merely blinked, probably thinking that this was all a very bizarre dream.
"Commence the ritual."  He ordered.
The younger female grabbed Past!Astrid's hand.  As soon as their skin touched, Past!Astrid began to struggle.
"No, no.  This is wrong, this is a mistake!  Let me go, leave me alone!"  But the female fairy's grip was like steel.  She held on tightly as the older female began chanting in a language I could not recognize.
After a moment, the older female cut a gash into Past!Astrid's hand and used her blood to draw something onto the fairy's face.  A few words later and the young fairy dissolved into light.
Light that then made its way inside of Past!Astrid.
"Go now.  Protect them."  The male said, and suddenly, Past!Astrid and I were standing in our bedroom.
There was a moment of silence as she digested what just happened.  Then, she shot up from the bed and barreled downstairs.
"Mom!"  She yelled, running into the kitchen, where my mom was standing.
"Honey!  I thought you were at the prom!"  Mom stated, but Past!Astrid just began to say everything that happened.  Showing mom her cut to prove it.  There was a moment of silence, and then my mother's face darkened.  "Just as I feared."
"What- What do you mean?"  Past!Astrid asked.
"Don't worry.  You won't remember any of this in the morning."  Mom said.  "Plus- Astrid...."  I furrowed my eyebrows.  That wasn't my mother's voice.  "Astrid!  ASTRID!"
I snapped awake at the sound of my name.  Skylar chuckled and looked away.  "Wake up, we're here."
As I unfastened my seatbelt, I could only see my mother's grim face.  She knew something I didn't.  She was hiding something.  If this was all true, she was lying.
