~~~Astrid's POV~~~
"See? I didn't have to sacrifice anything! I saved them all with just a few messages." I said, obviously satisfied with my plan. I leaned back on the pillows, staring at the ceiling. There was a blissful moment of silence before the spirit of the Protector sighed.
"You didn't change anything. They will still die." She said, her tone impatient.
"Well, I warned them. That seems like their problem." I replied, crossing my arms. If they were still in danger... Was there anything I could do? "I'm not leaving you in control. This is my body, my life, not yours."
The voice remained silent.
"Okay, fine. Help me. Help me and I'll make sure they live." I said, hoping against hope that maybe we could strike some sort of deal. "I can't walk after Jeff stabbed me, I need your help."
"If you don't leave me in control, I can't give you my full power." She said.
"I don't need your full power. Just enough to be able to walk, please. I don't want to give up my future to save a bunch of monsters." I replied. There was another moment of silence.
"Just keep them safe." And then she went completely silent.
I swung my legs over the side of the bed. I hesitated for a moment before attempting to stand. Without adrenaline fueling my body I felt like I would faceplant the moment I attempted to step forward. But I took a step and felt no pain. Another step, and everything felt fine.
She was working with me.
I walked towards the door and tried it. It was locked. I glanced at the window.
Terrible idea, especially with my injuries. I took a deep breath and walked over to it, attempting to open it. Thankfully it was on the first floor of whatever building I found myself in. Sadly, it did not budge. I glanced back around the room. There was a chair beside the bed.
Hmm....
I grabbed the chair and walked over to the window again, bracing myself for what I was about to do. After a brief moment of hesitation, I swung the chair full force, hitting the window and shattering it on impact. Sounds of alarm came from outside the door. Before anyone could come in and cut my escape attempt short, I climbed out the window and began to run.
I don't know for how long I ran, but by the time I collapsed from exhaustion I was sure I had lost them. I remained sitting on the ground for a few minutes. There was an impatient hum in the back of my head. I assumed the spirit of the Protector was telling me to move, so I stood up and kept moving. My surroundings were unfamiliar, but I did not let that deter me. Eventually I stumbled into a corner store and walked up to the counter.
"Hey, dude. Can you lend me a phone? I... I need a phone." I said to the clerk, trying to seem as friendly as possible. He stared at me for a moment before sighing and reaching for his cellphone.
"Sure, just don't stray too far." He said as he passed it over the counter. I smiled and took a hold of it, walking to the door but not stepping outside. The rest of the store was empty, thankfully. I quickly dialed the number in mind.
The phone rang twice before a much too familiar voice picked up.
"Hello?" The voice asked, sounding very tired.
"Skylar! Oh thank God! I can't believe you're fine, I was so scared! I'm so sorry, I just-" I began, but he cut me off.
"Astrid, shut up. I'm a little angry, but whatever. Why are you calling?" His voice did indeed sound annoyed.
"I- Well, for starters I wanted to make sure you were okay." I replied.
"And?" He asked.
"Well, I'm stranded in the middle of nowhere. Turns out my mom was the bad guy and now she's gonna get all of them killed. Good times, good times." I explained, shortly after realizing that perhaps that wasn't the best way to explain it. He remained silent for a few seconds. "Sky?"
"No, yeah. I'm here. Gods, Astrid. You get in the weirdest shit." He replied.
"I'm sorry, I know I've already caused you so much trouble but I didn't know who else to talk to and-" I began.
"Okay, I found you. Sit tight, I'll be there in... Thirty minutes give or take." He replied and promptly hung up before I could ask what the hell he meant.
Had he traced the call? Probably. It was Skylar.
I walked back to the counter and passed the phone back to the clerk. "Look, can I stick around for a bit? I don't have money, so I can't really buy anything, but I need to wait for someone to pick me up, so... Y'know..."
"Did you have a run in with a gang?" He asked, grabbing his phone and placing it out of sight. I stared at him for a minute, wondering where that question came from.
"I, uh... Yeah, kind of. It was a mistake though, I didn't know anything. But I escaped, so cheers!" I smiled. He smiled in return and waved towards the refrigerators.
"Feel free to grab a drink while you wait. You look like you've had a rough day." He said. Surprised by his kindness, I didn't immediately grab something. However, as time passed, I felt a little more comfortable. After a while, I was sitting by the counter, drinking a coke and talking about my favorite video game and why it was the best.
For a moment I felt normal again.
