The doors to the Great Hall swung open as all the first years try to keep up with McGonagall. As I walked beside Harry, I could see others students start to point and whispers to each other. I didn't mind it, but Harry looked really confused.....
We got the end of the Great Hall, where an old hat was sitting on a stool, the Sorting Hat.
"When I call your name, come up and the Sorting Hat will put you in your house...... Hermione Granger."
I looked over at Hermione who was muttering to her herself as she went up.
"It's ok, don't worry, just relax..."
She sat on the stool and McGonagall placed the Sorting Hat on her head.
"Hmmm.... excellent mind.... but also a glimpse of.. oh! I know what to do with you.... GRYFFINDOR!!"
The whole Gryffindor table started clapping and cheering as Hermione made her way to the Gryffindor table.
"Ronald Weasley."
Ron gulped slightly and I heard Malfoy snigger slightly, I shot him a death glare and he shut up immediately. Ron sat down on the chair and sat up tall.
"Ah! Another Weasley..... I know just what to do with you..... GRYFFINDOR!!"
Ron sighed in relief and the whole Gryffindor table clapped, I could see some other red-headed boys cheering on Ron. They must be the twins my father was talking about.....
"Draco Malfoy."
Malfoy strutted over to the Sorting Hat and I rolled my eyes. The hat barely touched his head when the Sorting Hat screamed,
"SLYTHERIN!!"
Malfoy smirked and winked at me again. I just scoffed this time and rolled my eyes as he went over to the Slytherin table.
"Harry Potter."
Everyone started whispering and looking at Harry, I just sighed. Wonder what house Harry will be in.
The Sorting Hat was placed on his head and it seemed to.... be puzzled.
"Hmmm... difficult. Very difficult. Plenty of courage, I see. Not a bad mind either. There's talent, oh my goodness, yes - and a nice thirst to prove yourself, now that's interesting.... So where shall I put you?"
I frowned slightly at the Sorting Hat's last comment, thirst to prove himself?? Really?? I shook it off as Harry muttered something under his breath and the Sorting Hat heard.
"Not Slytherin, eh? Are you sure? You could be great, you know, it's all here in your head, and Slytherin will help you on your way to greatness, no doubt about that - no? Well, if you're sure - better be... GRYFFINDOR!!"
I clapped loudly as Harry made his way to the Gryffindor table, I could hear the twins yelling,
"We got Potter, we got Potter!!"
I giggled and gave a thumbs up to Harry.
"Katie Fairchild."
I spun my head around to look at a girl with light brown hair, with a strand of white and freckles walk her way up to the stool. The Fairchild family were descendants of the second magic family, they were known to have links with water. She saw me and smiled slightly, I smiled back and watched her sit on the stool.
"Well well... if it isn't a Fairchild..... Father in Ravenclaw and Mother in Slytherin.... so what shall we do with you?? Hmmm.... brilliant mind but.... oh! I-I see..... SLYTHERIN!!"
Katie smiled and walked over to the Slytherin table, I wonder what made the Sorting Hat stutter.....
"Dawn Lightwood."
I sighed and walked up to the stool, sitting down on it as the Sorting Hat was placed on my head.
"Hmmm... this one is a difficult as Potter's..... Mother in Gryffindor and Father in... Slytherin.... this one really is difficult..... I had to put you somewhere..... let's have a look at you."
I was as surprised as everyone else in the room, I stood up off the stool and looked at the Sorting Hat.
"You look exactly like your mother..... apart from that strand in your hair... that must be your father..... hmm... well looks like it will be.... GRYFFINDOR!!"
I sighed in relief and was about to make my way over to the Gryffindor table when the hat spoke again.
"One more thing Lightwood..... just because I chose to you this path.... does not mean you can change it in the future."
I was confused by his words but walked off to join Harry, Ron and Hermione.
"Nice to know your in Gryffindor Dawn..."
I smiled at the Prefect whose hand I shook.
"I'm Percy, Ron's brother, I'll be showing you first years around."
I nodded and looked back at the Teacher's table when Professor Dumbledore tapped on his glass to get everyone's attention.
"Welcome all to a new year of Hogwarts! Before we begin the banquet I would like to say a few words. As all of you should know, no students should be out after hours and that no student should ever go in the Forbidden Forest. I have also heard from Mr Flinch that no students will be allowed to go on the third floor if you don't want to die a extremely painful death. Enjoy!!"
Food magically appeared on the tables and I smiled brightly. I love magic.

After the banquet, Percy showed us first-years around the castle.
"Look Dawn! The pictures are moving!"
I giggled at Harry's response to the portraits of famous wizards. Some waved and I kindly waved back, smiling. We walked up the stairs to a portrait of a fat lady in a pink dress.
"Password??"
"Caput Draconis."
The portrait swung forward to reveal a round hole in the wall. We call hurried through, Harry help out his hand to help me up while Ron helped up Hermione. We suddenly found ourselves in the Gryffindor common room, a cosy, round room full of squashy armchairs and a brilliant fireplace. Percy showed us girls where our dormitories were and went off to show the boys. I pushed open the door to find four canopy beds which had our stuff beside it.
"Midnight!!"

I smiled as I saw my pitch black owl in her cage

I smiled as I saw my pitch black owl in her cage. She saw me and started tweeting and flapping her wings.
"You must be starving!"
I let her out of her cage while I fed her as Hermione walked up to me.
"Is that a black owl?! There's only a few of them in the world!"
I giggled and looked at her.
"Yeah my father got her for me when he found out I was going to Hogwarts...... he had one when he went here."
"Well we should get going..... we have Transfiguration with Professor McGonagall."
"Ok let's go."
I grabbed my bag which had my books in it and followed Hermione to Transfiguration.

Me and Hermione got to Transfiguration but there was no sign of Ron or Harry. The boys suddenly ran in and were breathing heavily, I looked at Hermione who just rolled her eyes. Ron looked at the cat on her desk and sighed in relief.
"Man imagine if McGonagall found out if we were late to her first lesson."
I turned to Hermione and we both let out a small giggle. Only if they knew... The cat on McGonagall's desk jumped down and magically turned into Professor McGonagall. I looked back at the boys and they looked at her in awe.
"That was bloody brilliant Professor."
"Well thank you Mr. Weasley, maybe next time I can turn one of you into a stopwatch, then you can come to my lesson on time."
"W-we got lost..."
"Then perhaps a map?? You have to get use to it boys, now I don't think you'll need help finding your seats."
They hurried to sit down and I smiled, turning back around to face McGonagall. I think I'm gonna like it here......
