Chapter Thirty

I stretched and yawned before opening my eyes. I gasped in shock. I was in my car, back in Stratford.

‘Ohhh’ I groaned slumping down in my seat.

Justin laughed over at me, ‘What?’

‘This is Stratford’ I mumbled as I looked out the window at the rain. How topical.

‘Well done Molly’ he laughed as he pulled into a parking lot.

‘Wait, where are we?’ I asked as he got the buggy from the trunk and brought it round to me door for me. And there was me hoping that we had ‘forgotten’ it.

‘The hospital’ he laughed, ‘we’ve only been away for a week’

‘Of course!’ I shouted as I got into the buggy and he pushed me into the hospital reception. ‘I have my follow up appointment.’

We got to the desk and waited for someone to see us. I told the receptionist my name and waited for a nurse to come and collect us. Admittedly I was a little nervous for this appointment, the cast was just to tide me over and see if the bone healed itself since the break was too severe to do anything with it at first. I am petrified of hospitals and needles and operations … basically just anything that involves pain. But I would never show it. I guess Justin just knew because as we sat waiting for the nurse Justin grabbed my hand and squeezed it smiling over at me.

The nurse arrived and came running over to us smiling, ‘I knew you guys liked each other!’ she grinned as she began pushing me along to the doctors office with Justin following behind. It was the same nurse we had had when I’d first came here after just breaking my leg. Justin and I laughed as I climbed up onto the bed and Dr Mason came in.

She grinned, ‘Molly! My daughter showed me you singing on you tube, you have an excellent voice!’.

I blushed, ‘thanks’ I looked down embarrassed.

She flipped through the pages of my charts then stood up and pulled a machine down over my leg. ‘We are just gonna take a quick x ray, Justin could you please stand outside’. I started to panic, they had already taken an x ray why did they need another one? I watched Justin leave the room and felt my heart drop. She took the x ray and walked over to the screen to inspect it. Her face wasn’t exactly happy. She took a deep breath and walked over to me.

‘Molly, it appears that a part of the fractured bone has pierced through one of your muscles and could potentially break through the skin. It hadn’t progressed that far when we put the cast on and that’s probably why you didn’t notice it’

My eyes widened. ‘So you’ll probably be expecting this but … Molly it’s essential that we operate on your leg as son as possible, if it breaks the skin you risk infection and that could cause many things, heart problems, organ failure, internal bleeding, blood clots, ‘

‘Thank you! that’s quite enough!’ I shouted before she carried on, I was physically shaking.

She laughed softly, ‘Its completely normal for you to be worried, I’d be worried if you weren’t, but nevertheless there is no way around having the surgery unfortunately. Now of course there is always a risk of complications with any surgical procedure, but they are very very rare.’ she smiled supportingly.

‘Uh huh’ I managed to choke out. Holy shit, I was terrified.

‘in fact, I know the surgeon who does these procedures very well and I can promise you that you will wake up and everything will go to plan’ she grinned. ‘Now because you are under 18 you are going to have your operation up in the children’s ward, which fortunately is just across campus.’ she smiled as she put the sides of the bed up and took the brakes off. She wheeled me out of the room, Justin was pacing the corridor.
