Hajime swung his bag over his shoulder, sighing as he stared back at Hope's Peak Academy.
How he wished he could be a part of the main course—have a talent.
He stood in front of the fountain, the water calming his mind a bit. However, nothing could tear his thoughts of never entering the main course out of his brain.
And then a girl bumped into him.
As Hajime looked down at her, she continued to walk into him as if he wasn't even there. But he kept his feet down, standing up straight like he was a wall.
Finally, he noticed the game she held in her hands. Once she looked up at him after losing, a small blush dusting her cheeks.
But Hajime's was more noticeable.
"Uh... hi?"
"Sorry," she bluntly apologized as she began to walk away from him.
"Wait!" He stopped her, taking her wrist in his hand. "Is that Shadowgate?"
Suddenly, the girl turned around and with a deeper blush, practically pounced on him. "You know that game? It's a classic!"
"Uh, yeah... classic." If he was being honest, Hajime wasn't used to a girl—or anyone for the matter—getting up in his face like that. So of course, his blush deepened too as he held his hands up in defense.
Suddenly, the girl backed off as she smiled to herself. "I've never met anyone with the same game interests as me."
He scratched the back of his neck, sheepishly smiling. "Well, I, uh... used to play when I was younger. Nothing more than that, really. I've gotten out of video games a while ago."
She hummed, saying nothing else. But she didn't move from her spot, keeping herself comfortable standing next to the reserve course student.
"So, uh... what's your name? I'm Hajime Hinata."
The girl looked up at him once more, actually distracted from her game. It caused another loss, but she didn't seem angry. "Sorry, I guess that was a little rude of me... I'm Chiaki Nanami."
Chiaki lowered her hands, along with the console, and now faced Hajime. "What's your talent?"
Now he frowned a bit, turning away from her. "I don't... have one. I'm part of the Reserve Course."
"Reserve Course?" It was clear she had no clue what that was.
"It's nothing." Hajime sighed, tightening the grip on his bag. "Just a place where students go if they don't have a talent."
Chiaki stood there for a little longer, shrugging a bit. "I've gotta go. But I'll see you tomorrow, right?"
Hajime knew she was from the main course, as everyone spoke of each student with their talents. He assumed she was the Ultimate Gamer, as she was obsessed with the screen.
"Uh... yeah, sure."
He had no idea where they were going to meet or if she even planned on seeing him again, but the smile she sent him as she left gave him small hope.
As Chiaki made her way to the fountain the next day, she tripped.
Fortunately, Hajime was there to catch her, but her response was something he didn't expect.
"You're really hard, Hajime."
The fuck I am—? Blushing at her words, he even looked down at himself to confirm, which he was not. "Wh- What?"
"You're really toned... yup. You're strong alright." She smiled, getting back to her feet. "What's wrong? Why are you blushing?"
"I'm not," he quickly spoke, mentally cursing himself just as fast. "Uh... anyway."
"Hey, I brought us games to play." Even though her voice was kind of blunt and more or less monotone, Chiaki seemed rather excited by her facial expressions, to play with him.
And so, the two sat down on the bench as she handed Hajime a blue console and she kept her pink one. The two then connected and played the game, the only sound heard being the sound effects of the game.
If he was being honest, Hajime couldn't keep up with her. She was constantly beating him, and just when he thought he was going to win, she came in and he took the loss.
"I lost again," he said after losing for the fourth time. "They don't call you the Ultimate Gamer for nothing. Must be nice."
And though they've known each other for just two days, what she said next shocked him yet again.
"Talent isn't everything, you know."
He glanced over to her with questioning look, but she still kept her eyes glued to the screen.
"Having a talent means you're stuck to that talent. It's all you do, and you can't escape it. You get to do whatever you want all day... I'm stuck playing video games."
Hajime never thought of it that way. "Do you not like playing video games?"
"I do, I really do... it's just that sometimes, I wish I could do things without being referenced as the Ultimate Gamer. That's all people know me as."
As she spoke, her eyebrows furrowed. Not once did she look up from her screen, playing the game as if her life depended on it.
That's when he really thought about what she said and suddenly, a feeling of pity washed over him.
The wanting of a talent so bad, he never realized that some Ultimates may have just wanted out.
He placed a hand on hers, making her finally stop playing and look up at him. A hint of a sparkle was in her eyes, a small blush dusting her cheeks.
Hajime smiled down at her, rubbing the back of her hand with his thumb. "You know, Chiaki... you're one of a kind."
She smiled a bit, looking away from him in slight embarrassment. "I've known you for a day."
"And I can definitely say that you've managed to make me think a little harder on this. Not change my mind, because being an Ultimate sounds awesome."
Chiaki, hearing the teasing tone in his voice, laughed a bit and nudged him. "It can be for the most part."
"And even with all the games you play, you still managed to make time for someone like me." Hajime smiled genuinely, which she was now confused at. "Thanks."
"That sounds pretty negative... just because you're in the Reserve Course doesn't mean I can't hang out with you. You... you seem really fun to be around. I hope you don't mind if we keep on meeting here..."
Now it was Chiaki's turn to feel a little embarrassed. She never thought she would say something like that to anyone except her classmates, but here she was.
He nodded, a happiness within him ready to burst any second. "I'd like that."
After everything, and he meant everything that had happened in the past two days with Chiaki—walking into him, tripping and even saying he was hard, much to his embarrassment, playing video games—all that was practically the most fun he's had ever since he got into the Reserve Course.
Chiaki Nanami was truly one of a kind.
