Rantaro noticed how off (Name) was lately.

Yes, she answered the phone whenever he called—yet he had to initiate it every time. She answered his texts, although he could practically feel the dryness coming from her end. One word texts, with nothing to show how she felt.

It was like she was practically emotionless.

And not to mention how she was in school. Of course, (Name) greeted him whenever she saw him—he was her boyfriend, after all. But she didn't seem to smile as much anymore, even when by him. (Name)'s eyes would always look drooped, like she was upset about something.

Maybe she was, but every single day? No, something was wrong. And as her boyfriend, someone who cares deeply for her, he planned on finding out what was wrong and how he could help.

He didn't think it'd be that easy, though.

Rantaro found her at one of the lunch tables outside the school, eating alone. When he placed his tray down and sat, she lifted her head and he found tear stains on her cheeks.

"(Name)... what's going on with you?" he asked, leaning forward a bit.

Seeing as he had taken her hand in his, squeezing it gently, a held-in sob escaped her throat, which she didn't want. Her free arm fell on the table and her head dipped inside.

Rantaro heard her soft crying and frowned. "You know... you can tell me what's wrong."

He stood up, letting go of her hand for a split second, and then sat next to her instead. He wrapped his arms around her, bringing her body close to his in reassurance.

He had to admit, he wasn't the best at comforting. Even if it was his girlfriend, for whom he cared deeply about, Rantaro just couldn't figure out what the right things to say were whenever someone cried.

But he was determined to do the best he could to at least get her to tell him what was going on. From there, he was sure he could do something to help.

"I want to help you in any way I can, (Name)," the green-haired teen spoke softly. "If it's too private, I understand... but you know that I'm always here for you, no matter what."

Finally, some words left her lips as she lifted her head just a bit. "Yeah... I do know."

Seeing that her mouth opened again, Rantaro figured she was going to say something more. And she did, as she grabbed her arm and began to explain to him what was going on.

When he heard her words, he listened intently. He allowed her to grab his arm, to look to him for safety and comfort. And now, knowing what was going on, he was able to help her through it.

"Hey, Rantaro."

A chuckle. "A call from you? Seems rare these days."

"Oh, shut it before I hang up the phone. I just wanted to tell you something."

"I'm listening."

"... thank you. For being there for me, like you always are."

This made him smile. "Is everything okay at home?"

"Better than it was before—I think it'll improve, though. Just takes time."

"And with school? Grades?"

"That's all improving, too."

"And how are you sleeping?"

A little laugh was heard on the other line. "A lot more than an hour. I'm... I'm glad you care so much."

"All that I ask in return is for you to tell me whenever something is wrong, alright? I don't like seeing you cry, (Name)."

"I will. I should've told you sooner, and I'm sorry."

"You don't have to apologize for anything. It happens to the best of us."

"Oh... by the way, you should really make your bed. Can't believe I can see your room from all the way down here."

Rantaro blinked a few times, seeing his unmade bed. Then he walked over to his window, seeing his girlfriend on his front lawn, a wide smile on her face, her eyes lit up.

God, how he missed that gorgeous smile of hers.

He hung up the phone, putting it in his back pocket and walked to his door, opening it. "Well if my bed's so messy, why don't you come in and fix it for me?"

(Name) laughed and ran up to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. He let her in, his arm around her waist, glad that he could finally see her smile again.

A/N: Sorry if this was a little vague, I didn't exactly know what types of problems to put in. So I kind of just hinted at what could've been going on with the reader and him checking up on her.

The time skip, of course, is what transpired in between the beginning and end and how Rantaro actually helped the reader through everything. I feel as if I actually did write it all out, this would be a 19,000 word chapter.

So I hope this was okay!
