I cast a sad glance in the general direction of Liam, trying to sympathize with him, but he just looked too depressed to even try and talk to him right now. His eyes were downcast, as if he were looking down at the road. I swear I saw small red circles forming rapidly around his eyes, followed by a small diamond of liquid dripping off his cheek.
I wanted to comfort him. I really wanted to say something to him, in an attempt to make him not hate me. Anything. I'm sorry didn't seem like the proper phrase. Those two words meant nothing. And plus, it wasn't really my fault anyway. If it hadn't been for my idiot, all powerful king father, I would have picked my husband myself, and Liam could have stayed, non depressed with Danielle.
Sighing, I tried something else. Reaching over, I touched his large hand with my tiny one, wrapping it around his index finger. He looked over to me for a moment, his eyes seeming more bloodshot than ever. He studied my face for a moment, before it contracted into anger, yanking his finger from my delicate fingers and turning to look out the window.
Gulping, I turned around, deciding to give up on that for now. I sighed, slipping my phone out of it's little compartment in the side of the car door, unlocking it and absently flipping back and forth around my screen.
"Princess, we will drop you and Liam off at the airport to catch your jet, okay? We have some more buisness to attend to while here," the guard that wasn't driving inquired, turning in his seat to catch my eye. "Can you two handle that?"
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Liam shake his head violently, still not looking. I smiled polietly, and nodded my head. "Yes sir, we can handle that. We'll meet you back at the castle in a few days."
His dark eyes flicked back and forth between us for a moment, before his eyes narrowed on me suspicsiouly. "I trust you to get you both back to the castle, in one piece. Not one of you staying behind and the other heading back to the castle. Is that understood, Princess?"
"Yes sir," I gulped, watching Liam nervously from the corner of my eye. He flinched lightly at the mention of staying back, but other than that slight motion, he didn't move any further. "I accept that responsibility. You will see both me and Liam back whenever you return to duty." A plastered a fake, yet wide smile on my face.
"Alright. Don't let me down, Princess, I won't hesitate to tell your father," Without waiting for me to respond to him, he turned back around, folding his arms over each other and looking out onto the road with a hard expression. "We're here, by the way. Your things are in the back, Princess. We'll get Mr. Payne some things whenever we get back to the kingdom. Out you go." He made a shooing motion with his hand.
Sighing, I slipped from the seat, smoothing out my dress as I shuffled around to the back, pulling my bright pink bag and green duffle bag from the open trunk door, shutting the door lightly. Checking over my shoulder, I made sure Liam was followed me as I stalked briskly down the concrete alleyway toward the tiny awaiting jet.
Liam fell in step beside me, staying a few feet away from my side, however, looking out into the distance absently. His eyes were dried by now, the red circles getting better but depression was still evident on his face.
"Hi," I murmured lightly, watching his face with my eyes. "I'm Sage. You know, these aren't the correct choice of words, and they mean nothing, but I really am sorry. I don't approve of this, and I wish I could send you back. But if I did, my dad would just send more people to get you."
"It's not your fault," He said, clenching his jaw, not bothering to look over at me. He then laughed dryly, clenching his fist by his side as we walked. "I don't approve of it either."
"I really wish I didn't live there, this arranged marriage is absolutely stupid," I muttered, looking down at my feet as they scuffled across the surface, kicking small rocks here and there.
