"Liam, concentrate," Jay snapped his fingers lightly in front of my eyes. He was currently teaching me part of the kingdom's history in the large library that was stationed on the first story of the large house, castle, whatever the hell it was called. I couldn't concentrate, I was still thinking about me and Sage's conversation from a few week ago.
We hadn't spoke too much since then. I spoke to her in the morning, being polite while I was around her brothers and father. Waving and smiling to her whenever I passed her in the long hallways. It was the best I could do without talking to her, because if I did manage to talk to her with a one on one conversation, I would probably burst into tears at how right she was with some of her words, and how she made me realize what my future had come to. What I would be doing the rest of my life.
"Sorry Jay," I sighed, looking down to the ancient wooden desk in front of my face, clenching my fists until they were white. I swung my leg back and forth, the bottom of my shoe scuffing on the stone flooring. "I'm a bit distracted. Maybe we should do this some other time."
"Penny for your thoughts?" Jay looked at me expectantly, not hesitating in the slightest to ask. He drummed his fingers against the wooden table, making a steady drumming rhythm. "It's not like you can learn the whole history of a kingdom in a few hours anyway."
"Just thinking.." I trailed off, taking a deep sigh, and placing my elbows onto the table. "Sage and I had a conversation the other day. And it's been bothering me. I don't know why either, but..just..never mind."
"I think you need to clear your mind," Jay said, rubbing his chin. "Here, why don't you head out to the stable. I presuming that one of the guards showed you where it was?" At my nod, he continued, "head down there, and get one of the stable workers to get you a horse. Relaxing rides always help clear my mind."
"Thanks Jay," I said with a tiny smile, shoving the chair back, and stalking from the library. The heavy doors seemed light under my fingers as I maneuvered from hallway to hallway until I finally found the main room. I pushed through the clear doors, stepping out into the garden in front of the house.
Bouncing from stepping stone to stepping stone, I made my way down the winding path that led toward the large stable in the distance. Long white fences cascaded out behind the stone buildings, and if you looked long enough, you could see tiny fuzzy dots moving within the luscious green of the fences.
I hopped down from the path onto the concrete sidewalk that wound around the car drives, sprinting across the road right before a large black car entered, and finally flanked around the edge of the first stone stable building.
A door finally appeared after what seemed like me walking for miles along side the rough edged building. I wrapped my hands around the heavy metal doorknob, and yanked it open, stepping quickly inside.
The first thing that hit my noise was the strong smell of animals. Horses. The first thing that hit my ears was how loud the barn aisle was. Horses neighing and shuffling around. Stable workers busily pacing back and forth with wheelbarrows, pitchforks, and buckets filled with everything from grain to water.
I leaned against the side of one of the stalls that faced me, creeping along the edge until I finally appeared in the aisle, narrowly avoiding getting my foot ran over by a young stable boy who rushed by with a wheelbarrow filled with fresh hay.
"What brings you down to the barn Mr. Payne?" My head whipped around as I saw a kind looking man approaching me. I had never seen him before, but his eyes flicked with recognition. He had dark side swept hair, and his dark eyes showed age, paired with the wrinkles on his face. He wore the traditional castle uniform, with a little plastic tag, marking him as the stable manager. Or at least this section of the stable. The tiny name printed under his title on the plastic tag read "Mr. Forner."
