Roads

"Soon we'll reach the Indo-Pakistani border...We'll be saying goodbye to India very soon." Kakyoin announced, waking up Scarlet from her nap. She opened her eyes and sat up, looking at the road ahead. She had been leaning slightly against Joseph's arm.

"Indeed. At first I wondered what kind of country we'd walked into, but now I miss the hustle and bustle of Calcutta, and the rushing waters of the Ganges." Joseph said in reply. Jotaro grunted softly.

"I'll be coming back again, so I can make Avdol a proper grave." Polnareff said solemnly, and Scarlet looked at him.

"Mr. Avdol..." Kakyoin muttered, looking down slightly.

"The road's getting narrower."

Kakyoin looked back up, and the rest of the group followed his action. In front of them was a red car driving rather slowly, bringing up dust. Polnareff coughed as some came in through his window.

"Stop driving so slow! You're in the way!" He said, annoyed. "I'm gonna pass them!"

As he swerved to do just that, Scarlet was pushed into Jotaro, as Joseph was pushed into her. Kakyoin frowned.

"Polnareff, you're being reckless!" He complained as Polnareff just laughed.

"This four-wheel drive is great!"

"Hey, do you think that might have flung pebbles at their car?" Scarlet asked, looking back at the vehicle. She couldn't see the driver.

"Who knows? It could have." Polnareff answered.

"We don't need any trouble or accidents right now." Joseph said, also looking back at the car. "I'm wanted because of what happened in Varanasi, you know. I'd like to get across the border safely."

They continued driving, when Polnareff suddenly cried out in surprise and slammed the brakes. Scarlet gripped her seatbelt tightly as she was flung forward but kept in her seat because of the belt.

"What's the matter, Polnareff?" Joseph asked loudly. "I told you we don't need accidents!"

"N-no, look! Look who's standing over there!" He pointed ahead, and the group looked. Scarlet gasped.

"Good grief..." Jotaro muttered, tipping his hat down.

"Hey! Looks like we meet again." Anne said from the side of the road, taking off her hat and letting her hair run down her back. "Give me a lift?"

The group all groaned softly.

"I mean, I'm a girl. Soon I'll be wearing a bra, and doing my nails for the boys. I'd look pathetic wandering around the world when I'm that age! No offense, Scarlet." Anne explained herself from her spot on Scarlet's lap as the young woman sighed. "This is the only chance I have right now! To run away from home and see the world... Don't you think so?"

The red car from earlier had caught up to them. Polnareff looked at the rearview mirror then back to the road and sped up.

"I mean, I feel bad for lying about going to see my dad in Singapore, but let's just forget that!"

Beep! Beep!

Everyone except Polnareff turned to look behind them. The car was right on their tail.

"It's the car we passed earlier. They appear to be in a hurry." Jotaro said.

"They didn't appear to be in a hurry before." Scarlet muttered.

"Let them pass." Joseph told Polnareff, who nodded and lowered his window, sticking his arm out and signaling for the car to pass them. It did.

But when it got in front of them, it started to slow down again, forcing Polnareff to slow down as well.
