Chapter 36: The Fallen Hero

June 20, 2016

Alejandra's P.O.V.

We had just finished shutting down the magnetic field disruptor we were assigned. Ever since the trial date, I definitely noticed a change in D's behavior. Usually, I was the distraction because we knew, between the both of us, he was way better at the stealth thing than I was. Yet, he refused and insisted he'd be the distraction.

"Are you okay?" I asked frowning pulling one of his arms so he could face me.

"Yeah," he replied. I knew he was lying, but I decided to not push it. Especially considering what I had to tell him...I felt like this is the only chance I was going to have...I knew to expect the worse considering his current mood. He turned to continued back to the zetatube.

"Look, I need to talk to you," I replied, "I won't be able to pay back the loan in time and I honestly added wedding preparation time into paying it off, but they have the wedding scheduled for this month too. I can't cancel it or they'll take the company, and like you did what was best for Kal and Arti, I have to do what's best for Uncle Malcolm..." But Then...there's Alice...

D stayed quiet for a moment and I wasn't sure what he was thinking and that worried me.

"Maybe, it's for the best," he replied.

"What?" I said taken back from his reaction.

"You don't get it, do you?" D said turning to look at me as the conflict showed in his eyes, "your soul was in that gem, Al! Don't you understand what that means? In that future, I lose you!"

"Yes, but it also means we have a family together," I replied walking up to him and holding his face in my hands.

"I just don't know..." he frowned, "maybe marrying Jackson and retiring from the hero life is the best thing."

"You are being ridiculous," I frowned wrapping my arms around his neck, "Is this why you've been so protective? Like at the Summit and now with the distraction? D, I haven't even had Alice yet. From what I could tell, my death still has a few years to catch up." D didn't say anything as she moved away grasping his hands. "once that debt is paid off and I divorce...I'll hope to still have a chance. If you really want me to give up on us, then I guess I'll see you at the wedding. I think I'm going to go back to work." I leaned in and gave him a kiss on the cheek before I flew away as my heart slightly cracked.

Alice's P.O.V.

I knew we were playing with Fire.

I knew no one knew for certain how long I'd be capable of holding it back.

I knew of the voices that were against me living a normal life...

I knew I lost the right to one.

I was willing to accept it...but the guilt that colored Mom's life energy was something I couldn't bare...

So I did all I could to try and erase it.

I practiced.

I trained.

I suffered...
