Teagan silently cries as she reads Kacey's letter. I wrap Teagan in a hug, I hold her as she continues to read. She finishes reading the note, and hands it to me. I read it and tears fill my eyes.
"I'm so sorry Teag," I whisper. Teagan just sits on the bed and cries. Alex climbs on the bed with us, she hugs Teagan. "Are you alright?" Alex asks. "Yeah I'm okay," Teagan whispers back.
Everyone's still asleep, it's only seven fifteen. "We should go get coffee and hot chocolate," I suggest, I want to change the subject. "Okay" Teagan sniffles, as she slides her metal leg on.
We sneak out of our motel room, leaving the others sleeping. I hold onto Teagans hand. "You can squeeze if you need to," I state. Teagan gives my hand a slight squeeze, but nothing like she used to.
We enter the lobby where off to the side, we find the breakfast bar. The three of us walked over to the coffee machine. I make hot chocolate for Teagan, and coffee for me. Alex makes a Coffee.
We all sit down at a small table. "I love you Teag," I whisper. "I love you Ry," Teagan responds. "I'm really sorry about Kacey," Alex states. "It's not your fault Alex," I speak. "I know," Alex replied. "Thank you for letting me say goodbye," Teagan sniffled. "It was no problem, I would do it again if I had the chance," Alex remarks.
Teagan reaches her body over to Alex and gives her a hug. Teagan cries on Alex's shoulder, Alex rubs Teagans back. I know that Alex is only a kid, and we literally just met her this week, but it feels like we've known her forever.
"You guys were close weren't you," Alex whispers. Teagan nods at Alex. "Kacey basically raised me ever since middle school," Teagan responds. I think that Teagan should tell some of the stories, remembering the good things helps to heal. "Can you tell us some stories from your time together?" I question. Teagan takes a deep breath and nods in response.
"This one time Kacey came to my house, my brother was beating me up, so Kacey kicked his shins and took me to a hotel. We stayed in the hotel for the rest of the week, we just sat there and played board games," Teagan remarks.
"And this other time in grade six, I was bored at school and I had finished all my work. I skipped class and went over to Kacey's class room and asked to speak with her, she came out and asked what was wrong. I literally told her that we should ditch the rest of the day, we went to burger king and bought funky shades at the Irving," Teagans eyes fill with tears,
I grab both of Teagans hands and pull them close to me. "It's going to get better," I whisper. "I miss her so much," Teagan whimpers. "I miss her too," I state. I allow a tear to fall from my eyes.
"I didn't know her well, but she seemed like she had a good heart," Alex remarks. "Kacey actually visited my room one night, she seems like she really cares for everyone she meets," Alex adds.
"She cared for everyone, even if she shouldn't have," Teagan states. That's true, I've heard a couple stories of her parents. They weren't the greatest, especially her dad.
I take a sip of my coffee, it burns on my tongue. "We should get back before the others wake up," I suggested. The three of us stand up and walk back to our room. Teagan holds my hand, she slightly squeezes every now and then.
We entered our room, the others are all awake. Cannons eyes are red, probably from crying. Teagan and I walk over and sit by Cannon. Teagan puts her arm around him. "This is fucking crazy, Kacey's actually gone" Cannon snaps. "I know," Teagan stutters.
Cannon met Kacey when he was in seventh grade, Teagan introduced them. It was also around then that they met Grayson. It was last year that they had met Mikey and I.
Poor Mikey was killed at the start of the war that changed everything. Mikey wasn't the nicest person though, he got aggressive at times. Mikey was special though.
I guess if it weren't for Kacey punching that boy in the face, none of us would be friends. We would probably already be dead because we wouldn't be fighting alongside each other. Except for maybe Teagan and Brynn, her dad made that connection.
"Are you okay?" Brynn questions us. "I know you three were close to Kacey, maybe we should put the battle off until tomorrow," Brynn adds. "No, this ends tonight," Teagan responds.
"Do we even know where we're going?" Alex asks. We all look around at each other. "I know where the cave begins," Travis states. "Is it close to here?" I question. "It's four hours away," Travis replied "Okay" Teagan speaks.
"What time do we leave?" Alex questions. "Nine tonight," Teagan remarks. I hope Teagan's ready for a fight, I'm really worried about her.
