I didn't like to consider myself as someone who did things half heartedly.

Sure, there's the off time where I didn't study before a big test or I slept in on the day of an examination, but it wasn't because I was doing things half heartedly. Sometimes it's just nice to take a break!

But now that I was obligated to do things with less effort than before, everything I did felt strange. Especially right now, as I stood across from a certain auburn male.

While I didn't really mind sparing with the boy, something in the back of my mind nagged at me impatiently. A handful of words I had spoken nearly a month prior to a shifty brunette who was (in my opinion) shiftier than ever.

Ever since that night, Ymir had been particularly attached to the petite bonde, Christa.

I wouldn't want to make a judgement call too early, but I had a feeling that the 'important person' Ymir talked about that night was her. I mean... it wouldn't have made sense any other way (unless the important person was Daz, but I doubted that he could make it into the top ten no matter how hard he tried).

"Aren't you going to attack me, (Y/n)?" called Floch.

Right. I nearly forgot about him.

Floch was a good soldier and had potential. He wasn't particularly talented in any one thing or another, but he had... confidence.

"Of course!" I called back, "sorry. I'm just... trying to get a good grip on the blade."

Wow.

If there was ever a doubt in my mind that my lies were bad, this was definitely the lie that could prove that doubt wrong.

"Hope you're ready."

I inhaled deeply before dashing towards the unarmed male.

Floch wasn't particularly good with hand to hand combat, but he could hold his own. At least, as long as his opponent was doing what the instructors had told us to do when attacking the defender.

Attackers were supposed to dash towards the defenders with both hands on the dagger. Something to do with 'more power behind the blade' or something to that notion. I didn't particularly remember their explanation from several weeks ago, but it was basically common knowledge by now.

Of course, a real battle wouldn't have such an obvious anticipation. It was just foolish of someone to think that there was only one way to attack. It's probably why the commander suggested we try out new techniques for both defending and attacking.

Once I was about an arm's length away from the redhead I dashed to the side rather than straight ahead.

There was nothing wrong with attacking someone head on. There was really no way that someone wouldn't be attacking someone head on unless it was a cheap shot or surprise attack. That being said, running straight on was still too predictable.

Changing it up a bit wouldn't hurt, right?

Floch's eyes trailed me as I circled around him. He was on guard, but not particularly ready for an attack.

His body wasn't squared to mine.

Within a moment's notice, I lunged towards the redhead.

Floch didn't have enough time to dodge the dagger and keep himself steady. He had to take a step back so that the dagger wouldn't hit his chest.

With one of my hands, I let go of the dagger and gripped the boy's shoulder opposite to that of which he took a step back with. I pushed back on him as I pulled one of my feet under the foot which was closer to me.
