Year 850

Two years.

It took two years just to get where I was standing today. Two long years of grueling, hard work one day after the other, just to be presented with the opportunity of becoming a soldier. Many questions lingered in my mind.

Was it worth it?

What came next?

Was I scared?

Am I ready?

I shook my head. Of course the training was worth it! I made a promise that I intended to keep. I promised her that I'd never leave her behind. We were going to get through this together.

I couldn't quite believe that tonight would be one of the last nights with everyone in one place. In just a few days, everyone would split up to join different regimens. It was almost surreal to think about it, so I tried not to. But trying not to think about it was a little difficult as tonight was especially different.

We weren't eating dinner in the mess hall as we usually did, we were eating at the headquarters located in the Trost District. Very soon, we wouldn't be in Trost at all! We would be somewhere in the southern district of Wall Rose.

I glanced up at (Y/n) from across the table. Though I tried not to, I couldn't stop the excited grin from reaching my lips.

I noted that (Y/n) never made any motions to look up from her food; not that she was eating it either. She wasn't nearly as excited as I thought she'd be, but I chalked it up to the fact that I was just a little too excited. Then again, how could I not be excited?

"(Y/n)!" called a particularly cute voice, "I did it! I made it into the top ten!"

(Y/n) snapped out of her daze and looked up, her (e/c) eyes seemingly filling with life.

"Congratulations Christa!" the (h/c)ette smiled, "that's really good! Have you already decided on which regiment you're going to join?"

Christa looked away. Not like an embarrassed sort of look but... well, I wasn't quite sure what kind of look it was. Definitely not certain but also not uncertain. Perhaps the petite blonde hadn't anticipated ranking in the top ten at all.

"Not really..." Christa murmured.

Sasha, who was sitting next to me, suddenly perked up, "I will definitely be joining the Military! I am sure that my parents will be proud to know how far I made it."

"Well, I'm honestly thinking of joining the scouts." Christa replied to the brunette's statement.

"What? No way! You should definitely join the Military with me!" Sasha declared, "we have both worked very hard to get into the top ten, so why not join?"

"I just don't think a life in the Military is for me..." Christa, with that same look from before, averted her gaze. "But what about you, Mina? (Y/n)?"

The grin that I had previously worn suddenly came back, "we're going to join the scouts together! We've always wanted to change the world, ya' know?"

"Right..." (Y/n) murmured, "change the world."

I'm not sure what sort of expression I expected to see on the (h/c)ette's face when I turned, but the look she had definitely wasn't it. The expression she wore was less like someone who wanted to change the world but someone lost in thought.

"You know," Christa started, pulling the attention off of (Y/n). Or, at least that's what she was trying to do. "I totally thought that it was going to be you in the top ten and not me, (Y/n)."
