Brie’s P.O.V

It was getting dark outside, I noted as I gazed out of the windshield. My mind was trying to think of something simple, like how the purple and yellow colors in the sky were beautiful. But, I kept thinking about complicated things like, Colby, and how I totally just ditched him in order to talk to Mason. Yet, I knew it was needed, for Mason had so much to explain to me.

My eyes flickered to the rear view mirror for some reason. I’d no idea what compelled me to look out of it, but when I did I saw a car behind us that looked oddly familiar to me. The color of the car was dark, maybe a forest green or a black color. I wish that the headlights were dimmer so I could see who was driving the dang car, but there was no avail.

Soon, Mason turned the car into a diner parking lot, and my eyes peeled away from the rear view mirror.

“I figured we could come here and talk,” Mason informed me with an almost sorrow filled look.

I glanced at him a second longer, but then he opened his door and got out of the car. Not knowing exactly what was wrong with him, I got out too.

We silently walked in the diner and sat down in a booth that was towards the back of the small, but cozy diner.

Once we sat down a waiter came bouncing over with a wide smile. She took our drink orders before walking -- skipping away.

I rolled my eyes and allowed myself to take in my surroundings. Realization hit me that I had never been here before. Part of me wish I had because it was a very homey place, with wood paneling on all the walls, and cinnamon incense burning on the tables.

I also took note to a man sitting in a booth behind Mason. The figure was wearing a dark hoodie that was pulled over his head, so I couldn’t see the person’s face, and the man sat down so fast, I couldn’t even get a glimpse.

My stomach turned as I had an undying feeling that I knew that man. There was just something about him that made me scratch my head wondering who he could be.

Suddenly Mason cleared his throat and I looked over at him. He was staring directly at me with a blank expression.

I released a loud exhale, knowing I need to break the silence that had been between us ever since we pulled out of my driveway. “Mason, I don’t think it is right, what you wish for me to do.”

Mason looked at me for a few more seconds before speaking, “Brie, please, I can’t deal with people at school making fun of me. I went through bullying in middle school ... I don’t want to go through it again.” Mason told me.

I could help but to sigh once more, “If, and I mean if, I did this, what about Colby?”

“Colby? What about him?”

“I don’t think you get it, he is my boyfriend. Don’t you think spreading a rumor that you had sex with me, might tick him off? Maybe even anger him enough to hurt you or break up with me.”

“Well then tell him the truth.”

“But ... I ... What would I say to him?” I quizzed.

“Something along the lines of ‘I never had sex with Mason, I am just saying that to cover his ass.’”

“So I can’t tell him you're spreading the rumor because you're gay?”

Mason coughed as if he didn’t like me blatantly saying he was ‘gay’.

“I really wish you wouldn’t...” Mason murmured.

“I don’t think Colby will accept that answer then,” I stated. “I really just think you need to find some way to either come clean, or prove you are not gay. None of which I believe should be you lying to the whole school about having sex with me.”

“Why are you so worked up about it B?” Mason asked as he called me by a new nickname he seemed to have given me.

“Because, it’s a lie.”

“Oh, the Queen of All Things Evil, is afraid of a little white lie? Come on, what is the real reason you don’t want to spread the rumor that you’ve done the dirty with me?”

The waiter hurriedly came over with our drinks. “Sorry it took so long. It seems they had to fill the fountain machine,” the waiter spoke as she gave Mason and I our drinks.

I just nodded and grabbed my lemon water.

When she walked away Mason gave me a hard look, as if waiting for me to answer his question.

I made sure to take a long sip of my cold water, in hopes of stalling long enough for him to give up on me answering. But after a minute I was out of water and Mason was still looking at me for an answer.

“I ... I don’t want to do it because ... because ... the video ... well .... grrr.” I knew I was so nervous to answer because I wasn’t one to go blurting out my reason for doing things, especially when they are personal.

“Just tell me Brie, trust me I won’t tell a soul, after all you know my darkest secret,” he honestly proclaimed.

I inhaled before exhaling and then nodded, “Okay ... the real reason I don’t want to lie to the whole school about how I’ve had sex with you before ... is because, I am a virgin and I don’t want people going around thinking I am a slut.”

Mason look at me with confusion, “But in the video, you told your mom that you had sex before.”

I shook my head, “I told her that so she would shut up.”

“Right, but everyone at school doesn't know you lied. So everyone at school already thinks you have slept with someone, all we have to do it put a name to that person and say it was me.”

“Mason, I really have a bad feeling about this.”

Mason rolled his eyes, “trust me Brie, it will be okay.”

“…” I bit my bottom lip before speaking to the persistent boy, “If Colby kicks your ass that is your fault. If he breaks up with me, I will hunt you down like the ninja I am.”

Mason smiled, “So you're in?”

“Oh what the fruit loops, I might as well.”
