"Carla! Carla!"
I'm startled because Bree is shouting my name.
"What, Bree? I'm having a good nap just now."
"You were screaming. I thought there's something wrong with you. But I found you still asleep."
"Really?"
"Yeah, you were screaming... his name,"
"Oh," I remember my dream. It looks like even in my dream he will never leave me.
"It's just a bad dream, Bree," I try to convince her.
"Right. Are you okay, Carla?"
"Yeah, I have to be okay. I'm going to be a mom now." I smile at her.
"I can't believe you're going to be a mom. I forget how time flies. Last time I remember we were just 17 and having a Christmas dinner together. And then suddenly boom, you're carrying a baby."
"Yeah, it was a good time," I remember that old memory.
"Why do you choose Carla as your name?" She asks me,
"Carla means strong, Bree. And I have to be strong. For my baby, I have to be strong. It's just me and my baby, now." I give her my answer.
"How far is your pregnancy?" She lays beside me on the bed.
"I'm 16 weeks now, Bree." I rub my stomach. Smiling while thinking about my little angel.
"Is it a boy or a girl?" She rubs my a bit swollen belly too.
"The OBGYN said it was a boy. But it's too early to tell. But, I will accept him or her no matter what the gender is. I will love him, and he will not be lonely." I answer her with a smile.
I don't like calling my baby an "it". So I have been calling my baby he.
"I hope it's a girl. If you're having a boy, we're going to have serious problems." She scowls.
"How so? Baby boy will be cute," I defend.
"Boy means fighting, blood, puke, weed, cigarettes. You still think they are cute?" She humors me.
"I love your optimism." I give her a sarcastic answer.
"Hahaha. What is your plan now, Carla?" She asks me.
"I'm going to the Maria Mother and Child hospital tomorrow. I'm going to see the director there. He is going to interview me. Wish me luck, Bree."
"You don't need luck. I know you're going to kill it. You're the best doctor ever. The hospital is not that far by the way. It's quite near from here. I'll take you there tomorrow, okay?" She grins at me.
"Thank you but you don't have to do that. I can just borrow your bike tomorrow." I answer her. I don't want to bother her.
"I don't have to. But I will. And you can't say no. Do you know that everything in Australia wants to kill you?" She talks playfully.
"How many times are you going to play "do you know" games?" I roll my eyes.
"I'm serious. I read somewhere that 21 of the world's 25 most deadly snakes are in Australia. And here they have the largest crocodiles in the world." She talks seriously. I gape at her. I'm amazed by her knowledge but also question her choice of life.
"Why do you choose to live here if it's so dangerous?" I confused.
"Liam Hemsworth?" She looks very serious.
"Sorry?" I still don't get it.
"Oh, God. Please please please tell me you know who Liam Hemsworth is." She begs.
"Yes, I know that actor. I watched his movies." I think I know where she's going.
"Yeah, I love that guy. It broke my heart when she got married to Miley. But enews said that they are split up." She actually looks sad.
"And that means what to you?" I scold her.
"I hate you." She scolds me back.
"Love you more, Bree. I don't know that I'm living with a child though." I hit her playfully.
Then she sticks out her tongue.
"See? Five years old." I point her.
And then we spend some time on the beach until sunset. I know I shouldn't be thinking about Nathan. But I keep remembering him. Last time I heard before I go to Australia, he's engaged to Lisa. It broke my heart badly. Every newspaper published its story. I wonder, how long they have been together. Maybe he's already with her all this time. Maybe he's been screwing both of us. No wonder he's always tired. And here I thought he's tired from work. Disgusting.
"Do you like it here, Bree? Do you ever miss The States?" I ask her.
"Yeah, I like it here. But it doesn't mean I miss The States. I'll come back to The States. Maybe just for holiday, or I come back for good, I don't know." She shrugs.
"Do you find someone here?" I wonder if she has found someone.
"What? Do you mean boyfriend? Nah, I'm not ready for that. I met some guys, but they were all friends, you know? It was just for fun. I'm sure you'll find a hot guy anytime soon. And that jack ass Nate will be sorry." She looks angry.
"Pfftt, I'm pregnant, Bree. Who is interested in a pregnant woman?" I say to her.
"Hey, you have to know, some men are interested in pregnant women, interracial relationships, BDSM shit like that. People have their own fetish," she says it while wiggles her eyebrow.
"You're unbelievable. I don't even want to know how you know these kinds of stuff," I can't believe her.
And then she burst into a laugh.
"Come on, let's go back inside. Tomorrow is another challenging day for you, Bree."
