Happy.
Sad.
Such a basic use of adjectives. It's what every single person in our society has used at one point to describe another.
But Iris?
She never seemed either.
Yes, when she read her books and there was a joke she'd laugh.
But that was just one second of bliss, it could mean nothing, or maybe everything.
Sad?
Maybe, but it never seemed like it.
Depressed couldn't have been an option, she never did anything to give off the impression.
Were there words for someone in between?
Blank, dull, emotionless. Not sociopathic. It has to be something close to that thin line that separates someone from expressing how they feel and just not being able to. Not wanting to.
But you can never really tell though, can you? How someone is feeling.
A face is like a mask, a front for your deepest secrets. The only thing that you can control, the thing that you can manipulate to only allow people to know what you want them to know.
But, what about Luke?
Luke felt empty. He was like an open book and everyone knew it.
He felt like there was always something missing inside of him. That he was a puzzle, only partially put together, and his other pieces may never be found. If they are, chances will be they're bent or broken, and glue or tape, none if it will last forever.
One day, everything will slowly wither and break, until it deteriorates to absolutely nothing.
Some thing's just weren't meant to be fixed.
"Luke."
God, there she was. Her face was resting on her left hand as she read intently, not taking her eyes away from the book as she took a sip of her Sprite and placed it back on the table.
"Hello, earth to Luke?" He heard someone say as he felt something hit his forehead.
Luke turned his eyes away from Iris, the girl who occupied all areas of his mind and turned over to his group of friends, who were all staring at him as if he said something completely unreasonable.
Luke looked down at the french fry on the table and picked it up, turning to Michael, "was that really necessary?"
"You were staring at the mute," Michael smirked, taking a sip out of his water.
Iris, her name was Iris.
Luke cringed every time somebody called her something other than her name. Just because she chose not to speak did not mean anyone had the right to call her the mute.
It was demeaning, it wasn't right, it was just rude. She's so much more than her voice.
Luke rolled his eyes sneaking a glance at Iris, who throwing out her usual can of Sprite and picking up her backpack. Where was she going?
"No I wasn't," he replied, shaking his head.
"You stare at her a lot, Luke," Ashton pointed out, taking a bite out of his pizza and then glancing down at his phone, "It's a bit creepy," he added, his mouth full.
"Ashton, don't speak while eating, it's gross," Calum cringed. "And yeah, Luke, you kind of look at her a lot."
"I don-"
