Mistakes.
Everybody pretends to act like they aren't a big deal and that we all make mistakes because we're all human. Then somebody makes a mistake that might actually affect you, and all of a sudden you're supposed to be perfect. How could you make that mistake? What a shitty move, Luke.
Congrats, you fucked up everything.
"Luke, are you even paying attention to me?"
Luke was exhausted of hearing his name all the time. It always felt as if everyone always needed him.
He was sick of hearing his own name.
"S-sorry, mom."
She sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose, "sometimes I really worry about you."
"Sorry."
"Luke, sweetheart, you're my son and I love you," she said carefully, "so I have to tell you that sorry won't fix all of your mistakes."
He knew that.
Obviously if sorry fixed everything, there wouldn't be wars. If sorry fixed everything, people wouldn't be getting divorces. If sorry fixed everything, maybe Luke wouldn't be so damaged.
But guess what?
Sorry fixes absolutely nothing.
No matter how many times somebody may apologize, it won't erase the mistake already permanently etched into their life's memory.
Instead of saying anything Luke got up from his chair, grabbing the keys off the kitchen table, heading towards the door.
"Where do you think you're going?" His mom questioned, in an upset tone.
Stopping in the frame of the door, he took a deep breath, glancing back at his mom. He couldn't live like this for much longer. Everyday it was mistakes, lecture, mistakes, lecture, breathe, punishment.
Like his entire existence was one big inconvenience.
What else could he say besides sorry?
Nothing.
He was just supposed to sit there and nod in agreement, while she pointed out everything wrong with him.
"Out," he stated, calmly shutting the door behind him.
Getting into the car, Luke drove to the nearest park, a park he hasn't been to in awhile...years even.
Getting out of the car, he crossed over the small bridge and headed over to the group of kids surrounding a giant fire.
"Luke! You made it!" Ashton asked, running up to him. He was usually in charge of these things. It was like a tradition thing, but Luke hasn't gone to them in years. Pretty sure most of the student body was here. Even if you were completely invisible in school and dreaded social events, the Irwin bonfire is something you just can't pass up.
"Uh yeah, guess so," He shrugged, his eyes scanning through the crowd.
"Ash!" A light voice called out, seeming to come closer to the two boys. "Oh hey Luke," Liza, Ashtons girlfriend, smiled. Liza kind of reminded Luke of a flower. Drop dead gorgeous and sweeter than practically everything. It was impossible to hate her. She had straight blonde hair and really blue eyes, Luke was almost positive he had a crush on her in 8th grade. Not quite sure though, wasn't his best year.
"I'm cold, Ash," She said politely, looking up at him with big eyes.
He smiled, quickly pulling off his sweater and wrapping it around her shoulders. Then, wrapping his arm around her waist leading her back towards the fire.
