I look at her. She looks so sad and broken.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"Is this what it feels like? When someone breaks your heart?" She mumbles.
"Why..." I begin. "Why would your heart break— don't tell me... don't tell me I'm the reason your staying here-!"
Her voice cracks and she bows her hand and holds her arm. "What if- just what if you were?"
I put my hand on her shoulder. "I have to keep my feelings away, hidden, just like you did, to protect the ones I love... I've become independent and broken. I want to destroy my enemies, just like you."
"I don't want to kill you!"
"I know."
"No you don't! You don't understand!"
"No Annie. You don't understand me!"
But I don't understand her either.
She doesn't know I love her...
She doesn't realize that I'm trying to protect her before I go...
