Dianne untangled herself from Joe's arms and rolled over to turn off her alarm. Looking at the time, she remembered the date and realised it was their little angels first birthday. Joe's eyes flickered open and he looked at his gorgeous wife in the eyes.
"Morning sweetheart" Joe said smiling.
"Morning Joseph, I can't believe it was one whole year ago when little Riley was born!" Dianne said to her husband.
"I know, one year ago today our lives changed forever!" Joe said softly.
They both got up and walked into their now one year daughters pink colourful bedroom.
"Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday to you, Happy birthday dear Riley, Happy birthday to you!" they both sang as they walked over to the cot where she was sleeping.
Dianne gently rubbed her back and then scooped her up.
"Morning poppet! Today is a very special day isn't it!" she said.
Riley replied by babbling into Dianne's shoulder. Joe, Dianne and Riley headed downstairs towards the kitchen where Joe and Dianne had set up balloons and all her gifts the night before. Dianne placed her daughter on the love seat with all her presents.
"Wow what a lucky girl!" Joe said to her.
After what seemed like an eternity for Joe and Dianne, Riley finally finished opening all her gifts.
"Right then munchkin, are you ready to go to auntie Zoe's?" Dianne said tickling her daughter.
"ba ba ba" She replied.
Finally after a lot of rushing around Joe and Dianne had got everything they needed to take with them into the car and strapped Riley in her car seat.
"Right then- are we ready!!!" Joe shouted back to his daughter. Dianne shouted back
"Yesss!!!" like she was a child.*2 hours later*
The Sugg's finally arrived at Zoe's house and as no suprise Riley was flat out asleep. Joe walked round the side of the car and carefully lifted her out her car seat. Holding her, gently rubbing her back to slowly wake her up. Joe then passed Riley to Dianne and he got all the luggage from the car. Then Zoe came bounding out.
"shhhh Zo, Ri is asleep" Dianne said gently rocking her daughter side to side.
"sorry! I was just so exited to see my little one year old niece" Zoe beamed.
Dianne walked inside with Riley still wrapped around her like a koala and Alfie came out to help Zoe and Joe with the luggage. Once everything had been unloaded from the car Riley began to stir in Dianne's arms and started to whimper.
"Hey hey baby girl, it's ok" she exclaimed.
Suddenly, Riley let out an ear piercing wail and Dianne took her upstairs. Dianne sat down on the bed placing Riley on her knee and began to do all she could to make her stop crying. She tried changing her, feeding her, playing with her but nothing would work. Dianne lay Riley down on the bed and sat down next to her, she then broke down into tears.
About 10 minutes later, Joe came up the stairs to see why Dianne was taking so long and saw his wife bawling her eyes out on the bed with his baby next to her.
"gorgeous what's wrong?" Joe asked with slight worry in his voice.
"I can't get the stupid thing to shut up, i'm such a bad mum Joe!" Dianne said in between sobs.
"Right, firstly I know you don't mean that about calling her stupid and secondly, Dianne you're the best mummy to Riley and she is so so lucky to have you" Joe explained trying to calm Dianne down and also stroking Riley's back to soothe her.
"Mum arrived about 5 minutes ago, i'll take Riley down to her to see if she can help. And you go wipe those tears away." he said, giving her a kiss he picked up Riley, who was still crying, and headed downstairs.
"Aww here is the birthday girl!" Tracy said.
"Mum please can you help to soothe her because she hasn't stopped crying. I thought you'd be the best for that. You know as you are the most experienced." He laughed.
Tracey took Riley off Joe and began to pat her bottom.
"you see Joseph, this is a little trick I used with you and Zoe. Just pat her bottom whilst rocking her side to side and she should stop."
And just like that, Riley stopped crying. Around 10 minutes later Dianne came downstairs with her hair in a messy bun however, you couldn't tell she'd been crying.
"Thank you Tracey, you managed to stop her from crying!" Dianne thanked.
"Aw no problem sweetheart, just a little Nanny trick!" she said whilst winking. Dianne took back smiley Riley from Tracey and began to play with her like she always did.
Later on Riley had been put into her high chair with a party hat on. Zoe had baked a mini cake for her niece and a normal sized one for everyone else. She lit the one candle and they all started to sing to Riley. A burst of laughter came from the little girl as she looked around the room confused on why everyone was singing to her. When Zoe placed down the cake she said "blow the candles out Ri Ri!" Behind, Dianne made a subtle blow to help her daughter out. "Yayyyyy!!!" everyone clapped their hands and Riley copied. Then Joe took out the candle and Riley stuck her whole head in the cake, tearing it apart like a wolf with a carcass.
Once both cakes had been demolished Zoe and Alfie offered to bath Riley and give Joe and Dianne some relaxation time. Zoe returned about an hour later with a squeaky clean baby who was passed out asleep in her arms. Dianne looked at Joe and said
"I think this is going to be a birthday to remember!"
"Indeed! I love you Dianne"
"I love you too Joe!"A/N~ word count- 1004
