Joe silently opened the bedroom door, trying to balance a coffee for Dianne and breakfast without spilling any of it onto the carpet. Simultaneously he was trying not to wake his girlfriend up. Joe was quite shocked at the fact that she was still fast asleep at 10am as it was very unusual for him to be up first. Joe put down the food and drink next to Dianne and climbed back into bed to watch his beautiful girlfriend looking all cosy and huggable.
As he was sipping his morning coffee and scrolling through his phone the body next to him stirred and shuffled closer towards Joe. He placed his hand on her head and stroked his thumb on her scalp just to let her know he was there.
"Do I feel warm to you Joe?" Dianne mumbled suddenly.
Joe put down his phone and coffee and used his hand and placed it upon her forehead. "A little bit, are you feeling unwell?" He asked frowning putting his arm around her. Dianne just silently nodded and snuggled closer to her boyfriend.
Joe adjusted himself so both Dianne and himself were more comfortable and she was lying on his chest. He laid a gentle kiss on her red hair assuming she would tell him what was wrong in her own time. Joe assumed she had the flu as he knew it had been going around and especially when he saw Dianne shivering whilst still under the thick, fluffy duvet.
"I think it's just a cold" Dianne said quietly placing her own hand on her forehead.
"Hmm i'm not sure about that- your symptoms seem like it's flu to me. I know you don't want to hear that Dotty. What's feeling poorly?" He replied.
"I've got a banging headache, sore throat, a stuffy nose and a bit of a sore tummy" Dianne said hoping it wasn't the flu.
"I think it's definitely the flu my gorgeous, considering how quickly it's come on." Joe said, gently. Dianne nodded, knowing he was probably right. "Do you want me to get you anything?" He asked.
"Just a hot water bottle and my phone please, I want to face time mum." She asked moving off his chest. He nodded and walked off to find the things she'd asked for. He made sure the room was as dark as possible to prevent Dianne from having a possible migraine.
Joe knew he needed to speak to Rina on the phone before Dianne did so he did just that. He called Rina and after three rings she picked up.
"G'day Joe how you doing?" She asked.
"Oh hi Rina, sorry to bother you. Dot has come down with something and it's sounding like the flu to me- do you have any tips on looking after a poorly Dotty?" He asked frowning at the fact that his girl was sick.
"Awh bless, the first thing you need to know is that she is very stubborn when it comes to her being sick. You need to make sure she does what you tell her to. Take her a hot water bottle and some pain killers and she'll basically only eat dry toast when she's sick." Rina suggested.
Joe spoke to Rina for a little longer and then soon enough he was back in their bedroom with Dianne's bottle and phone. However, she seemed as she had fallen back asleep. He picked up Americarno from the floor and snuggled it by her side.
He decided just to sit next to her on the floor and stroke her hair like Rina had told him what she did. Dianne started to move around again and her eyes flickered open.
"Hello again, i've got you a hot water bottle." he said placing it under the duvet. "Would you rather me next to you on the bed or on the floor?" She simply patted the side next to her and soon enough Joe was back cuddling her side.
An hour had passed and Dianne was starting to wake up properly now. "Do you want to speak to your mum now?" Joe asked. Dianne nodded unlocking her phone, making sure the brightness was as low as possible.
"Oh Dotty, look at you." Rina said when she answered the phone. "How are you feeling sweetpea, Joe told me you were unwell?"
"Not well Mummy, my head hurts and my belly aches." She replied sighing.
"What's your temperature?" Dianne looked over towards Joe.
"The last time we checked it was about 38°C which is a bit warm."
"Well you're definitely fighting something Dotty aren't you, you don't look well at all." "Have you had any medicine?" Dianne shook her head.
"She won't take any Rina, i've tried to give her some though."
"Are you sure Di? It might make you feel better, some ibuprofen for you stomach?" Rina suggested.
"No, I just want a cuddle and sleep."
"Ok then sweetheart you have a little sleepy, call me if you need anything but i'm sure Joe will look after you just fine. I love and miss you lots and lots and I hope you're feeling back to your normal happy self soon."
The phone hung up and Dianne soon enough dropped back into a deep sleep relatively quickly. Joe held his girl whilst watching youtube, every so often checking on her.
"Joey my head and tummy still hurt." Dianne whined when she next woke up.
"Aw dot you poor thing. Do you want some painkillers, they'll definitely do something to help?" Joe said putting down the lid of his laptop looking at her pale face.
"No thank you though." She rolled over, curling herself into the foetus position clearly trying to ease her pain. Joe just simply rubbed her back.
"Do you want to maybe try and have a little walk around, maybe that'll help?" He suggested, putting his hand on top of her stomach.
She nodded and carefully with Joe's help sat up. Joe took the hot water bottle from her stomach and held his hand out for her. He pulled her dead weight up and she flopped against his shoulder.
Not long after she'd been waking with Joe around the apartment she went back to shivering so Joe grabbed one of her cardigans that he could loosely lay across his shoulders. They walked towards the bathroom and Dianne let herself in.
"I'll wait out here, will you be ok?" Joe asked.
She nodded and closed the door behind her. She was in there a while and Joe was starting to worry.
"Are you ok?" He asked slowly opening the door to see his tired girlfriend who had fallen asleep on the floor. "Oh Dotty, oh deah. You're really not feeling well are you?" She shook her head laying all her weight on Joe.
About 5 minutes had passed and Joe slowly sat Dianne up and propped her against the wall. "I'm just going to get you a glass of water and then we can go back to bed, is that ok?"
Soon enough the two of them were back snuggled under the duvet, entangled arms.

By 5pm Dianne had seemed to have perked up a bit. "I feel better" She said.
"That's good, I don't like it when my girl is poorly."
"Thank you for looking after me, I love you." She said softly.
"I love you too Dotty."
