Love is something that could be labelled as poison; and people would still drink it anyway. Its a dangerous, unpleasant sensation. But its addictive. Kind of like a drug. But love is merely an illusion. True love doesn't exist. It never did and never will.
Or so Adrien Agreste had spent the last seventeen years of his life hearing from his father, Gabriel. And if a person grows up hearing the same old things again and again, chances are, they'd never forget those words.
So Adrien, like his father, loathed the entire concept of love, finding it pathetic and ridiculous. Not to mention, overrated.
If love really did exist, then why did his mother leave him after having given birth to him? Why did his father never spend any time with him unless it was to scold, lecture or punish him? Why did all of his romantic relationships last hardly any longer than a week?
Adrien certainly knew the answer to the last question. They never stood the test of time because he got bored with the pathetic, overbearing and affected nature of all those relationships.
All of his ex-girlfriends had wanted him for nothing other than for shallow and materialistic reasons. Because his father was the most famous fashion designer in Paris. Because he was a model. Because his father was wealthy.
Adrien couldn't help but develop a sort of detached and flaky approach towards all those girls who had practically forced him into going out them. Eventually, they all got tired of his apathetic attitude and dumped him, only to make room for some more useless fangirls and fuckbuddies for Adrien.
Now even though there are several people in the world who don't want love; like Adrien--there are also loads of people that are the exact opposite; those who long for it desperately.
Marinette Dupain-Cheng was one of those people.
Not that she would ever admit it, though. She liked to think of herself as an independent and self-sufficient young woman who was above such things. She acted like she didn't want any guy to ever fall in love with her at all. She believed that more than half of the male population consisted of nothing but narcissists and perverts and selfish cheats.
Marinette's beliefs, albeit incorrect, were somewhat justified.
When she was a little girl, Marinette was kind, gentle and cheerful. She was like a ray of sunshine, brightening everyone's day. She had loving parents and lots of good friends. For the first few years of her life, Marinette lived a mostly normal lifestyle; healthy and stable.
And then came her seventh birthday. Something happened to Marinette that night, something she never got over. Something that had completely ruined her and changed her forever.
Her parents threw her a surprise party and had invited several of their friends over. One of her father's best friends seemed to have developed an....unhealthy interest in Marinette.
Whilst everyone else was having fun, the stranger asked Marinette if he could go to her bedroom with her so that the two of them could play "a secret game".
Not knowing that the so-called secret "game" would haunt her for the rest of her life, she agreed to "play" it with him.
Nine miserable years had passed after the event but Marinette never told anyone about what the man had done to her on the night of her seventh birthday and how scared and broken it made her feel ever since.
But now she knew what it meant and why he had done it. She understood how horrible such an act was. She heard several stories stories about girls who had gone through something similar to what she had.
But she was scared of telling anyone about it. What if they didn't believe her? What if they didn't understand it? What if they thought she was making all this up just for attention?
One thing was for sure, Marinette never looked at men the same way again since that incident.
As a child, Marinette longed to fall in love with someone and live happily ever after with that person. At the age of sixteen, she still wanted it, deep down. But now she had forcefully convinced herself that she didn't.
She constantly told herself, and other girls, that men were cruel, selfish and completely untrustworthy. She convinced herself she didn't need a partner.
Marinette made a promise to herself. She promised that she would fall in love, not even if she wanted to.
Now allow me to make this clear. This is not a love story, its a story about what love really is and what it means to genuinely love someone.
This is a story about two selfish, stubborn people who seemed to have nothing in common. On the surface, at least. They shared countless arguments, yet everyone else around them could see their obvious feelings for one another. It was only a matter of time before the two came to terms with their own feelings for each other.
This is the story about how they got over their massive egos and finally discovered what 'love' really was.
In the weirdest ways possible....
