Chapter 9

Alex's POV:

I awoke with a start and shot up, hitting my head on the roof of my Lancer. "Ow." I rubbed my head. I heard a snort and looked over at Megan. "It's not funny." I said. A ghost of a smile played on her lips while she continued inspecting her machine gun she had gotten from one of Captain Grant's soldiers. "Have a lot of ammo for this." She said proudly, holding it up like a trophy.

"Careful with that." I chuckled. I turned my attention to outside and saw that it was very foggy, and there were a few Rotters out there. I looked behind me to see if anyone in Amanda's car was awake, but it reminded me of my conversation with Amanda last night. She had been really mad, calling me a child and such. At first I was angry she would even say that, but then I realized it was true. I was acting like a kid.

I focused back on Amanda's car and saw no one moving, so I assumed they were asleep. I turned back around and saw a few more Rotters than I had seen moments ago. Megan was silent, so I let my thoughts wander again. I didn't think that Jacob was a bad person, I just thought that he had made a terrible decision. I wanted to be his friend, because he seemed nice, and if he hadn't shot his uncle right there, I wouldn't trust him now. But he had, he had instantly realized his mistake and attempted to fix it.

I was shaken out of my thoughts as Megan literally shook me. I looked up and saw about twice the amount of Rotters I had seen before. I stared at Megan worriedly, and she pointed downwards. I got the message and ducked below the dashboard. We messaged over the radio to Amanda's car and woke Jacob up. We told him what was going on and he calmly replied "Well, we have a problem." "Yep." I agreed. He woke up the others and told them to get down.

We stayed like that for hours, never moving too much except for every once in a while making sure everyone was okay and checking to see how many zombies were outside our car. A few times Rotters came over and banged on the windows when they saw us, but it was never more than one at a time and they always wandered away after a while.

Finally most of the Rotters were gone and I got up to stretch my legs and back. But when I got up, my knee hit the radio button and turned it on by accident. A news anchor came on, and in my rush to shut it off, I turned the volume dial all the way up. The news anchor blasted for a few seconds before I woke up and finally shut it off. But by then, it was too late. We had the attention of close to a thousand Rotters. "Klutz." Megan mumbled, and climbed into the backseat. She motioned for me to get in the passenger's seat.

I did as I was told, and she took my place in the driver's seat. Amanda's yelling came over the walkie-talkie almost instantly, and I had to turn down the volume on that as well to keep me from getting permanent brain damage from her screeching.

"Drive, NOW!" Megan yelled into the walkie-talkie, over Amanda's screeching. Amanda finally shut up and Jacob started the Range Rover up, while Megan started up my Lancer. The engine roared to life, and floored it. Jacob wasn't far behind. The sound of groans from the Rotters were overwhelmed by the sounds of squealing tires and loud engine sounds.
