Chapter 20

Alex's POV:

The little girl just kept running, with me following close behind. She was actually pretty fast, her hair flying behind her. I wanted to shout at her to slow down a little, but I knew we had to get to my sister as soon as possible, so I pushed myself even harder.

We ran for probably ten minutes as she led me deeper and deeper into the forest. She suddenly came to a stop and turned around to me. I went to look down at her to ask what was wrong but something out of the corner of my eye caught my attention, and I looked up to see a rotter lurching towards Madison. I pulled out my pistol and shot it right between the eyes, the dead body falling to the ground.

Madison looked up at me, hands over her ears. I looked around for more and saw that with that one shot, I had attracted an entire horde of rotters towards us. I shot a few more before my magazine clicked empty. I reached into my pocket to reload and found nothing. I threw my pistol at the nearest rotter, picked up Madison and turned and sprinted away.

We ran back to her house where by that time I was panting and could barely breathe. I set Madison down and took deep breaths, bent over with my hands on my knees.

"Those things were in the way to get your sister." Madison said quietly. "I know." I replied breathlessly. I just hoped she had escaped before...Oh God. Can't think about tht right now. She's all right. She has to be.

Madison must have sensed my distress because she said "We'll find her. Don't worry." I tried to muster a smile as I looked down at her. "Yes. I'm sure you're right." I said back, and hugged her. She hugged me back, and it felt good to know that at least someone was trying to keep this little girl safe and sound.

We ended up going back up into her tree house where she had her sleeping bad laid out, while I had nothing. I felt terrible leaving my sister out there alone, it almost felt like I was deserting her, but there was honestly nothing I could do. I had no weapon or anything, and I could't fight through all those Rotters with only my fists, I'd be dead within a minute. As I laid on the ground of a six year old girls' tree house laying on nothing but a small picnic blanket, I shed silent tears for my sister, praying that she would be okay.

Yes, I'm sorry those chapters were a little short, but that's how I wanted them to be so I wanted to at least put out to at a time to compensate.  Let me know if you liked them, my goal is to have the next chapter out by at least the end of the month, but it will probably be some time before that. Thanks so much for reading, let's see if we can really push and get 1.5k reads on this by the end of this month! Already we have around 300 reads this month, so please share this with your friends on the social medias and stuff like that! We just might be able to hit 200 more! Thank you!
