Slamming my mom's car door shut, I head into the flow of students heading into Clark High School. I look around, my gaze resting on a freshman girl staring at me. She points in my direction. The whispers don't start long after. The "accidental" bumps and shoves aren't far behind as I weave through the crowd. The other kids give me a wide berth, whispering behind my back. I sigh. This years' gonna be great.
A shadow appears at my side. I look up to see Marcus's familiar face. His wavy black is a mess, covering his green eyes. His hands are in the pockets of his faded blue jeans. I smile as we start towards the doors.
"Aren't you excited to be back?" He asks, his voice laced with sarcasm. Another guy "accidentally" bumps into me, his friends snickering as they walk away. Marcus sighs, clenching his hands into fists as he pushes open the door.
I sigh. "Yeah, why wouldn't I be?"
He smirks. "That's the right attitude."
We weave through the stream of students on the way to their first periods. I stand in front of the door, my stomach twisting.
Marcus glances at me. "Let the shitshow begin." He opens, the door and we step in. Marcus stops just past the door, his eyes scanning the room.
A bunch of girls sit in the front, laughing, smiles filling their faces. The popular guys sit behind, their laughter ringing out into the quiet hall. The shy kids sit in the back rows, their noses in a book. A kid I don't recognize points towards us, and the class falls silent as we walk in the rest of the way, sitting down in the far back, not meeting their questioning gaze. The bell rings and I sigh. It's gonna be a long day.
Marcus glances at me as the teacher starts to drone on. "I've never gotten this warm of a welcome, not even after I got expelled for spray painting a teacher's car in eighth grade."
I smile despite myself. As stupid as his jokes have been, I've needed his distractions. And he knows it. He glances at me and I playfully punch him. "Oh really?"
He nods. "It was extremely disappointing. I was expecting a hero's welcome."
I roll my eyes."Well, what did you get?"
He sighs. "Only two claps on the back."
I bite back a smile."You poor things. Your ego must have been deflated."
He laughs. "Don't make fun of my ego, it's very delicate."
"Lyla, Marcus, would you like to tell us what's so funny?"
I look up, meeting the green eyes of my English teacher. She sighs, as I glance around the class, to find irritation and annoyance lining everyone's faces. I guess we were louder than we thought...
I blush and Marcus smiles. "No ma'am."
One of the popular cheerleaders, Mia turns to me, her brown eyes scanning me as she flips her platinum blonde hair, grinning. "It can't be more entertaining than this summer right? Unless you like danger?"
Snickers and hoots ripple throughout the classroom and the teacher shakes her head. "That was uncalled for."
I stiffen and Marcus meets my eyes. "I didn't expect that one..just ignore her."
"I'm trying...will the whole year be like this?"
He shrugs. "I hope not..."
Her football playing boyfriend, Parker turns to us from behind her, his green eyes twinkling. "Is it really though? I mean it's what we're all thinking." He pauses,.."Well a nicer version."
