On Monday night, Elissa had slept over at Oli's house because his brother on an overnight school trip so wasn't there to bother them. It was much like most of their sleepovers; with films and gossip and makeup. On Tuesday morning they walked to school together later than Oli normally went to school. He didn't see the point in them getting up early if they didn't have to avoid Tom.
They walked and talked causally about some boy that Elissa had a crush on, and in that moment Oli debated whether to bring up his secret admirer or not. On one hand, he really wanted to tell her because they never kept secrets from each other and he knew she would be excited. On the other hand, he kind of liked having the secret admirer all to himself. The letters felt so personal, written just for him to see, and he didn't know if showing them to Elissa would ruin that illusion for him.
For once in his life someone was interested in him relationship wise, a boy at that. He had never really had someone want to be with him before. Sure, he had had countless creeps cat call him in public but this was so much different. When he walked by people and they called him nicknames or cute or sexy, he felt gross and creeped out. When the person who wrote the letters called him those things it made him feel special and appreciated.
They eventually reached the school and headed to Oli's locker. Without thinking Oli pulled open his locker, gasping when a pink envelope fell out. He began to panic. Shit, he hadn't even thought about the fact that Elissa was with him and that he would definitely have a new letter in his locker.
Elissa's eyes wondered down to the letter that was now on the dirty corridor floor. She glanced at Oli in surprise before bending down to pick the letter up. Oli's palms began to sweat, as he stood there frozen watching Elissa slowly inspect the pastel envelope before ripping it open.
It was if time slowed down as Oli stood there motionless. His voice failed him as he tried to tell Elissa to stop but nothing more than a small whimper came out.
Her blue eyes scanned the page, her eyebrows so high on her forehead that it gave her wrinkles. She looked up at Oli's face, her shocked expression mirroring his.
Oh shit.
"Who wrote this?" She asked impatiently.
"I-I don't know." Oli stuttered nervously. She rolled her eyes.
"Is this the first one you've received?" She demanded.
"N-no." Oli shook his head quickly. Her face became bright red and you could almost see the steam coming out of her ears.
"And you honestly don't know who is sending them?" She asked.
"No, Elissa, I-I would tell you if I did." He shrugged. His hair fell across his watery eyes as he looked at the floor. Oli was never that great at confrontation and every time someone raised their voice at him he became upset quickly.
"Why are you so blind?" She practically yelled at him. He flinched back.
"I-I-" He tried to form words but they all just died before they could come up his throat.
"Ugh, I'm going to kill him." She seethed before storming off down the corridor. Oli yelled after her but she was already gone.
He sighed before picking up the letter that Elissa had thrown back on the floor. His tears slipped down onto the paper, smudging the ink. He couldn't believe how angry his best friend had got over the letter, especially when she knew how upset it would make Oli.
What do I do when I am so in love with you?
I forgot what I wanted to say
What do I do when you won't change your ways?
It's time, it's timeIf I just saved you, you could save me too
If I just saved you, then you could save me tooThe words of the paper seemed to be another poem of some sort, sweet ones at that. He smiled through his tears and held the paper to his chest desperately.
He didn't understand what had caused Elissa to get so angry though. He though she would be happy that someone had taken an interest in him. Elissa had never gotten that angry at him before, sure they had fallen out but she had never yelled at him.
Why are you so blind.
What did that even mean? Blind to what? Did she know something that he didn't?
The bell rang, causing Oli to sigh deeply. Guess today was just going to be another one of those days.
