I can't believe it! I'm really doing this!! It's incredible! Okay just breath, Sus. In and out, think calm thoughts. I'm Susanna Stephens. Almost twenty-three years old and chasing my dreams. I've had a dream of moving to Nashville, since I was like 5 and heard Shania Twain, Dolly Parton, and other music stars of the time on tv. Right now, I'm on a big Greyhound like bus bound for Music City. I think we are almost there. I can hardly wait. This is a huge leap of faith, but I have to give it a try.
Oh! The bus driver just called out 15 more minutes and we will be in Nashville. The bus ride down here today has felt so long. The sights have at least been pretty on this warm fall day. I've seen families out playing in their yards, kids with dogs, lots of people just out and enjoying the sunshine. My fellow passengers pretty much keep to themselves, but I have noticed some of them have musical instruments with them. Yes, fellow musicians! It's getting somewhat dark now, I hope I can find an apartment or hotel where I can stay before it gets completely dark. Ok, yeah maybe I didn't think this all the way through. I know that I shouldn't have come down here without setting something up like a place to stay. But I'm a spur of the moment kind of gal... and I might have forgot too, but still.
Oh wow. The bus just stopped, we are finally here. I let the other passengers file off before me, and then I follow a suitcase in each hand and my soft guitar case across my back. "Excuse me, sir?" I said as I came up beside the big, shaggy, and slightly intimidating bus driver, he quirked an eyebrow up at me in a silent, yet answering 'what?' motion. "I was wondering which direction would be the best one to go if I was looking for somewhere to stay? Like an apartment or hotel?" I set down my bags on the sidewalk, and held my hands together in a pleading manner.
A kind, sympathetic smile comes across the man's face. "It's kind of late little lady, wherever you go you'll have to be real careful on the way there." Okay maybe he's not so intimidating, more like a teddy bear, grandpa type. He scratched his white beard, before answering, "I'd say you go right down that way. My sister's granddaughter is looking for a roommate, but tonight you may have to stay at a hotel if you don't reach her place by dark." He placed a slip of paper in my hand, along with a very pink, round can of something.
I looked down at my hand, a bit taken by surprise, "Pepper spray?"
"Yup. You can't be too careful down here. It's safer to be prepared. And the paper has my great-niece's address on it. You'll be safe if you end up staying with her. Just tell her, that her ole Uncle Jake sent you.." He gave me an encouraging smile, and motioned to my necklace, "Keep your head up, youngin'. I've seen a lot of folks not make it down here. But if that necklace means, what I think it does, you got the right One on your side. You just trust Him, alright?"
I touched my cross necklace, and with some tears at the rims of my eyes, just nodded, at a loss for words, I finally managed. "Thank you, sir. For everything."
"Oh, now don't cry in front of ole Jake. I'll be praying for you, sis. God bless you." He said with a wave of his big hand, as he shut the bus door and rolled away. Taking a deep breath, I threw my shoulders back and picked my luggage back up. Here it goes, Susanna. I'm coming for you, Nashville! Oh God, please help and protect me!
