Okay, so first off, not all of Nashville looks like you would expect it too from tv. I'd come down here to look at some colleges, my senior year of high school. Okay, so I was really scopping out the town for my dream career. It's not all glitz and glamour, and like most other big cities it has it's rough parts. I was just praying I wasn't in one of those parts of town as the sun continued to sink lower and lower.
Why I hadn't asked for better directions from Jake is absolutely beyond me. The address was written on the piece of paper in a pretty, very feminine handwriting. More than likely by his sister or great niece, if I were to guess. With my full focus on the paper I didn't realize where I was going until I had already walked smack dab into someone. "I'm so sorry. I wasn't looking where I was going." I looked up to the guy, a little taller than me, with (from what I could tell) dark hair peeking from in under a ball cap, sun glasses, and an Ohio sweatshirt. Why did he seem so familiar? And why was he wearing sun glasses at this hour.? Why on earth am I standing here rambling on in my mind, with a stranger in front of me?! I backed up a couple steps and held tighter to my new companion, my trusty pink pepper spray. "I have pepper spray. And I'm not afraid to use it!" I said in a strong, hopefully confident sounding voice, boy I hope I can operate this thing.
A grin leaped onto the stranger's face, and a nice laugh escaped his lips. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. Are you lost?"
"Is it that obvious?" I lowered my eyes, embarrassed but somehow at the same time oddly comfortable.
"Yeah. Kinda. Where you headed?" He asked, pointing at the slip of paper I held in a death grip in one hand, pepper spray the same way in the other.
I let my grip loosen a bit, but threw my shoulders back, again in an act of confidence. "How do I know you really want to help me? That you don't just want me to get relaxed and put away my weapon?" I cast him a slightly suspicious glance.
"I promise. I'm one of the good guys. What if I told you my name, and then I wouldn't be a stranger anymore?" He replied, and I saw an eyebrow lift above the sunglasses, I just answered with a silent nod. "I'm Joseph."
Two could play the first name only game. "I'm Susanna." I answered him simply. He kept glancing from my face to the paper in my hand. Or at least I guessed he was from the movement of his head, since he still wore the sun glasses. I bit my lip, thinking, then finally shrugged. "Fine." I held out the paper, letting him hold only one side of it, just in case. Hey, he didn't trust me with a last name, so he's not getting my paper.
I seen Joseph's (if that really was his real name) shoulders jerk back, maybe in surprise. He lowered his sun glasses slightly. "Where'd you get this?" His gaze traveled over my suitcases and guitar case. "Did you ride with Jake?" I nodded, crossing my arms, this was way odd. "Wow..." He blinked and put his sun glasses back in place. "Wow. Come with me, I know the place."
I decided I'd trust him, mainly because the street lights overhead had just turned on and he seemed nice enough, and not some attacker guy. He grabbed my suitcases, even though I attempted to protest he wouldn't hear of it. Along the way, my cell phone rang with Anthem Light's K-Love Mix, one of my favorite covers they had done. Joseph turned with a smile, I laughed. "Hey, Anthem Lights. Is one of my favorite groups. This is their best cover too!" He just grinned, while shaking his head, and turned back around.
We kept walking down the street, until we reached an apartment building with 4 floors. From what I could tell, the building was pretty and most importantly looked like a safe and respectable place. "Here we are." Joseph said looking up at the building then, back to me. "I think you'll really like it here, Susanna. Madison is a friend to some friends' of mine." He buzzed in and then led me up to the third floor. He knocked on the door of room 33.
A petite blonde answered the door with a smile, "Hey Joesph. Who have you got here? Hi..."
Something about her, I don't know what exactly, but I just liked this girl immediately. "I'm Susannah Stephens." I stuck my hand out to her as she ushered us into the apartment.
"I'm Madison Frost. Nice to meet you. What brought you two here?" She said with a tilt of her head, and glancing at Joseph.
"Your Uncle got on the job, quick, Madison. Jake gave Susanna here your address, hand picked your next room mate for you." Joseph said as he touched my shoulder, and I was a bit suprised that I didn't move away.
"Uncle Jake wouldn't give that address to just anybody. And him and Joesph here, both are good at reading people, so you must be a good apple!" Madison said with a chipper smile.
"Well my knight in shining armor work is done for today, farewell ladies." Joseph said with a goofy grin and a deep bow, then left.
"He's ... fun." I giggled. "Glad I decided to trust him."
"I'm really glad you came here Susanna. I can already tell me and you are going to be good friends." Madison said, then she showed me around the apartment. Good thing I had some money saved up, because this was a super nice place. With more than likely a super high price for rent. We ended up talking for the next several hours about where we grew up, what we'd done, where we'd been, and just all sorts of stuff to get to know each other better.
When we both went to our bedrooms, I didn't take much time to fix mine up. I left my suitcases in the spacious closet, changed into my pajama's, and collapsed onto the bed. I was exhausted and was just about to drift into sleep when a thought hit me. I sat straight up in bed, and had to stop myself from smacking myself in the forehead. No wonder Joseph had looked familiar. He was none other than Joey Stamper. From the Anthem Lights!
