Natalie's POV
When we arrived at the funeral, they asked us for our names. Sam introduced himself, but Steve could barely talk.
"Sam Wilson," Sam said softly.
"Um, this is Steven Rogers and I'm Natalie Carter," I smiled.
The minister was walking by and he overheard my reply and swiftly approached us.
"Carter? Were you related to Margaret?" he asked.
"No, I wasn't, but she was like family."
It's true. I feel like I know everything there is to know about Peggy. She was an inspiration. Sharing her last name was an honor and I tended to brag that because we had the same name, it was fate that Steve and I would end up together in the endgame.
Sorry, horrible timing for a pun.
"Would you mind saying a few words? I'm afraid that because of her occupation, not a lot of people knew her that well. We have have one speaker and I'm sure it would mean a lot to everyone here."
I was shocked by the request and I had no idea what to say. I looked over at Steve who had hopeful eyes and I couldn't let him down.
"Okay, I'm sure I can write a few things down," I agree.
The minister smiled and led me to a separate room where I'm sure I will find Sharon Carter. And, in fact, I did.
"Miss Carter, this is well, Miss Carter," the minister introduces me to the blonde.
She looked at me with suspicion, but smiled at the minister. He left shortly after and then we were completely alone.
"I don't remember seeing you on the family tree," Sharon stated and she made a circle around me.
"Relax, Sharon," I said and she gave me a surprised look.
"I'm not related to you. We've never met. I'm not from this earth, but I live in this universe now. I'm surprised you haven't seen me on the news," I said, somewhat snarky.
I don't dislike Sharon. She's incredibly badass, but she always rubbed me the wrong way. It's hard to explain. I just think they could've made her live action character so much better, but they didn't.
Sharon looks at me again and something clicked.
"You're the new female Avenger, aren't you? Natalie, right?" she smirks.
"The one and only. Well, actually Wanda's new, so I'm not the only new girl. Which is quite annoying because Tony treats me like a two year old -"
My sentence trailed off as I realized I was babbling.
"Sorry, I talk a lot."
"I picked up on that. So, why are you here, Natalie?"
"Because Steve asked me to be."
The look of disappointment in her eyes made me feel loads of guilt. I can't control Steve's feelings, but it's my fault that she no longer has a chance at all with Steve. I know they never end up together, but she doesn't. Sharon still had hope. And her assumptions destroyed it.
"Are you two, you know, together?" she asked the question I was expecting.
I didn't have a clue how to answer that, so I was honest.
"It's complicated."
~~~
Steve was asked to carry the casket ahead of time and we all knew that it would be hard for him, but he did it. Everything is just like I saw before, but this time it's real, which makes it even more heartbreaking.
