Can You Spare a Gem? ( STEVEN UNIVERSE FUTURE / SPINEL FANFIC )

Spinel's a loser

Stevens life went back to normal after his second encounter with Spinel. He assumed she was off living her dreams of playing sports amongst the cosmos. 

One day he went for a walk into town when he recognised a voice he hadn't heard in a long time. 

"Spare change? Spare change, ma'am?"

"Spinel? Spinel is that you?" It was. She was crouching on the sidewalk inside a cardboard box. Her shirt and weird pants were dirty and tattered. Steven didn't know that that could happen to a gems clothing. She held up an empty cup. When she saw Steven, her pupils shrunk, "uh, I, uh..." She closed her box. 

"It's me, Steven." He opened the cardboard box flap. "You tried to kill me once, remember?"

"Steven...?" Spinel croaked. 

"There ya go. So where're you living these days?" 

A man in a suit stopped next to them, "are you Spinel?"

"Yes?" Spinel answered.

"Perfect." The man said. "Sign here, please." He handed her a clipboard and a pen, and she gave him her signature. The man picked up her box and shook her out. 

"Oof," she fell on the pavement, then looked back up at Steven, "uh, nowhere."

"Great!" He said, encouragingly. "And what have you been doing with yourself? No, wait, let me guess!" He looked her up and down. 

"Hmmm...I see you've been working on that mustache, the tattered clothes, the awful smell..." He thought for a second, scratching his chin, "you're a football player?"

"No." Spinel answered deadpan. 

"A spaceman?" Steven tried again.

"No."

"A football-playing queen in space-"

"Don't you get it, Steven?" She sobbed. "I'm a lose-e-er! I lost my job, my home, everything!"

Steven gasped, "even your injector?"

"Nobody would take it. So I had to eat it."

"Oh-"

Spinel broke down crying. Fat tears ran down her face, but that's the art style I think. 

 "There, there." Steven pulled her in for a hug and patted her back. 

"You can come live with me."
