Soulmate AU

You walked around Dressrosa, ignoring all the red lines that drew people to each other. You were use to it by now. You've been seeing those strings for as long as you could remember. You didn't realize it meant you were seeing people's soulmate until you found out what it meant when you were 12. It was really cute seeing who would end up with who, but after a while it got tiring, especially since you were seeing a lot of people with the wrong person. It pained you, but you couldn't force people to be together when they're already destined, so you left it alone. Some of the strings were a little weird though, some people's connected to the toys walking beside them. This country is definitely hiding something.

What really annoyed you though, was that you couldn't see your own string, "Maybe I don't have a soulmate." You would always think to yourself, but then again, nobody's string went outside of the island, so maybe your doesn't stay in this country. There's still some hope, "(Y/n), you still can't see your own string?" Your mom asked you, again. You told your mom about the strings, which you regretted instantly, because ever since you told her, she would ask that same question every time you came home after leaving the house.

"No mom, I can't." You replied monotonously.

To which she responded with only a sigh and the shake of her head, "I'm sure your soulmate will come sooner or later." She tried to cheer you up.

"And I'm honestly not worried about it, so can you please stop asking me that whenever I come back from running errands or something?" You asked her.

Before she could answer, there was a knock at your door. You sighed and opened it, which revealed your best friend, "(Y/n)!" She greeted you.

"Hey, is there something you need?" You asked her, rubbing your temples. Your best friend didn't have a red string either and you told her about the strings as well. You stared at her a bit as you realized her string finally shown itself.

"You can see my string can't you?" She asked and you nodded, "Then lead the way!" She hooked arms with you and practically dragged you out of the door.

"You have to remember to let things happen naturally, they're soulmates for a reason." You reminded her.

"Yeah, yeah. I remember, but we got new visitors today! I'm sure it's one of them! I'm positive it is!" Your best friend exclaimed.

You followed where the string led, your best friend following closely behind. For some reason, the string led you in a circle a couple of times and your friend began to question if you could really see the strings of if it was some hallucinating drug you took, "I'm not hallucinating," You said, feeling her gaze, "I think your soulmate is just lost." You told her.

"This place is kind of confusing now that I think about it." She responded.

Once you were at a good enough distance you stopped, your best friend running into the back of you, "What'd you stop for?" She questioned.

"He's right there." You pointed where there were a group of guys in poorly dressed disguises.

"Um...which one?" She asked.

"The one with the green hair. Do you see him?"

"An old man?! My soulmate is an old man?!"

"It's a poor disguise, you idiot! Quit being so loud!" You softly yelled at her, "I don't need everyone knowing that I can see these strings. Also, your eyesight is if you fell for those disguises." You chuckled and she hit your arm.

"Shut up. So now what?"

"Um, just wait I guess. Don't do anything to mess this up...or mess it up for him apparently..." You mumbled, not really sure why he's in a disguise.

"Alright then...thanks (Y/n)." She told you and you both went your separate ways.

You were happy that your best friend finally found her soulmate, but you were also kind of worried that she would stop talking to you after this. Ever since you told her about the strings she would ask about her string everyday and nothing else, you'll just have to see. You walked home with your head hanging slightly lower than usual and that was when you noticed it.

The red string.

It was just emitting from the left side of your chest, where your heart is, "How long has that been there?' You questioned yourself, debating on if you wanted to follow it or not, "Follow it." You heard a voice.

No longer debating, you quickly followed the string, wondering who would be on the other end of it. You never really thought about touching the strings since you really saw no point in it, plus your hand might go through it, but for whatever reason, you had the strongest urge to touch it. As you followed the string, you stuck out your finger and poked it. It felt like just a regular string. Thinking nothing of it, you continued following it.

~~~
'This person is really fair.' You thought. You past up your home half an hour ago, you wanted to give up and try again tomorrow, but what kept you going was during those 30 minutes you saw the string vibrate. You had no idea what this meant, which is why you wanted to find the person as quick as possible.
You began playing with the string out of boredom as you walked, looking at it the whole time, not even thinking of look up, until you bumped into someone, "O-oh I'm sorry, I w-wasn't looking at where I was-" You cut yourself off when you seen the string connect to the man right in front of you.
You finally looked up to see his face. He was nicely dressed in mostly blue with a top hat to match, curly blond hair and blue eyes to match. You tried to regain your composure before he thought you were weird, "I-I uh I didn't mean to-"
"Can you see the strings too?" He cut you off.
The question startled you, "H-huh?"
"The red string. Can you see this?" He grabbed the string and held it up, you slowly nodded.
"How'd you know I could see it?"
"I saw you messing with it before you bumped into me." He pointed out.
'Oh, right.' You thought, a slight blush on your cheeks, "Did you touch it earlier? Because I seen it vibrate."
"Only because you did. I didn't notice it at first."
"You couldn't see your own either?"
"Not for a while."
"So my guess was right, it doesn't go out of the island your on." You both talked about the strings for a while, but neither of you spoke up about it connecting to each other nor did you properly introduce yourselves.
The blondie stuck out his hand after a while, you give him a confused looked, "I'm Sabo." He finally introduced himself with a smile.
You shook his hand, "I'm (Y/n)." You said, returning the smile with a soft one.
"Nice to meet you, soulmate."
(FINALLY FINISHED ANOTHER ONE SHOT! I actually kind of like this one lol. I hope y'all did too.)
