Christmas

It was Christmas Day, the guys of the family were watching the football while the girls were cooking every one except me. I sat next to Jordan who was watching the football intently. I was getting bored watching and listening to grown men shouting and groaning because their beloved team didn't get the decision their way. So I got up and went into the kitchen only to be told by Tiffany to leave.

"Please, can I do something. The shouting out there is getting really annoying" I asked.

"I guess you can help with the potatoes".

I nod and go over to where Jon is peeling potatoes. The amount of food being cooked can again feed a small army. I feel really odd sitting next to Jon as I was helping him peel the potatoes. We worked in complete silence neither of us wanted to talk. I guess you could cut the tension with a knife. I know both their mom and Tiffany could feel it. Because...

" So how long have you got Ava?".

"About 10 weeks if that" I replied not looking up from the potatoes I was peeling. Jon was really trying hard to avoid glances at me and to even talk to me. But I can tell as I catch his quick glances in the corner of my eye.

"I'm sorry".

" I have had the same as your brother. But it's not me you should be saying sorry to. And it's the same with him".

"I'm only sorry to you, Ava".

" I don't want to hear it. You two need to sort it out. Whatever the rift was years ago but it needs to stop. Its hurting everyone as much as it is hurting your relationship with your own brother".

He went quiet and carried on peeling. They are both being stubborn. I can't get through to either of them. They need to sort it out. I give up trying to help. I too carried on peeling in silence. I feel a pain in my stomach but I think it's a kick so I carry on. Ten minutes later I feel another one but this I gasp in pain and clutch my stomach. Jon looks at me. His mom and Tiffany come over.

"Are you alright, Ava?".

" Yeah, I think. I think it's just a kick".

"Are you sure".

" Yeah" I try and nod as another one hits.

"Jon, get your brother".

" What Joe?".

"No, Jordan" replies Tiffany angrily. "Please".

" JORDAN" he reluctantly called out.

"WHAT?" Yells Jordan from the family room.

"Get in here".

" I'm watching football. I don't wanna help with the cooking".

"Get in here, Jordan" replied his mom.

"No football is on".

" Get in here now. It's Ava" shouted his mom.

As I sat in the chair, I see Jordan come rushing into the kitchen. He looked panicked. He came over to me and sat in front of me with a worried look on his face.

"Are you alright?" he replied with concern.

" Yeah, I think".

"What happened? You got me worried" he looked up in my eyes. "It's the twins. They not coming are they?". I shook my head no.

" Pain in my stomach. I think it was a kick or several little kicks".

"Are you sure?". I nodded. " Ok. Shall we sit in the family room I think the football has finished?".
