While Olivia was happy about going home for the Christmas holidays, and seeing her father and Amelia again after such a long time of being away from them, a small part of her wished she was staying in Hogwarts during the holidays. The castle was beautiful. Christmas decorations littered every corner, and it was like a decorated tree was in every hall. She admired all the beautiful ornaments, the glimmering lights of magic made the whole thing seem like it was all from some kind of fairytale. Liv had lost count of how many times she has had to pinch her during her three months in Hogwarts, but she was pretty sure the majority was just during that one day.
"It's so pretty. A part of me doesn't want to leave." She voiced her thoughts as she and Hermione moved through the halls. Their packed belongings were stuffed within the chests they dragged along with them on their way to the Great Hall. Since Harry and Ron were staying at the castle for the Holidays, the two had decided to go and say goodbye as well as wish them a merry Christmas before they headed to the Hogsmeade train station.
"Me too, but I can't wait to see my mum and dad." Hermione said, a happy smile shining on her face as she thought about going back home. While she loved Hogwarts and enjoyed all the learning and new information it provided her with, Hermione had missed home greatly, and couldn't wait to go back for a little bit.
Their conversation was interrupted with the ring of voices echoing through the halls as they got closer to the Great Hall, passing by a group of ghosts who merrily sang Christmas carols as they flew through the halls. Sir Nicholas even spared a moment to wish the two girls happy holidays. A sentiment they both happily returned before walking through the large doors of the Great Hall, their eyes scanning the Gryffindor table in search of their friends. It wasn't hard to spot them as the Great Hall was much less populated than on a normal day and quickly they made over to the two boys who seemed to be playing chess. Even though Liv did notice it looked slightly odd; this must be the wizarding version of chess Ron often spoke of.
"Knight to E5." They could hear Harry speak, and Olivia watched in amazement as he didn't even lift a finger and the figure of the knight still moved to the place on the board. But while she was amazed by the way the game seemed to work, Olivia could see the flaw in Harry's move at the same time.
"Your queen can take his knight now." She leaned down and whispered into Ron's ear so Harry wouldn't hear. Even though it didn't have to be much of a secret as Ron's face spread into a slightly smug look as he too saw what Liv did and made it his next move. However, to the shock of both Hermione and Olivia, the queen did not only move to the E5 position, but even made a point of whacking the knight with a chair making the figure shatter into hundreds of pieces.
"That is totally barbaric!" Hermione exclaimed with a shocked voice, her brow furrowing in distaste as her eyes moved from the board to look at Ron.
"I think it's cool. But do you have to buy new ones every time you want to play?" Olivia asked curiously. While the animated version of chess seemed like a fun thing, it would also make playing it quite unpractical if all the destroyed pieces had to be replaced every time.
