When I woke up the next morning in Chassidy's bed with my daughter next to me. At first, I thought it'll be my husband but I just remembered what happened last night. I hope he doesn't come looking for me. I don't want my daughter or my child to be endangered ever again. I can care less about myself; I just want to protect them. I stretched and Mackenzie said, stretching the way I did.
"Morning mama"
"Morning sweetheart"
"Wait...where are we?"
"At mama Chi-chi house"
"Why?"
"Um....it's hard to explain"
"will we be home tonight?"
"I don't think so"
"Well how come daddy isn't coming?"
"He....went to work"
"Oh okay...well can I call him?"
"No Mackenzie!"
"But why?"
"Stay in a child's place, now go brush your teeth"
She stood silent and hopped out of bed to head to the bathroom to do as I told her to. I close my eyes for a minute and rubbed my belly, steadying my breathing. Thirty seconds later I got tapped on my shoulder and heard Chassidy's voice.
"Wake up"
"I'm still asleep"
"Well I need your help with grocery shopping"
"When?"
"At 2"
"Man, I don't want to leave"
"You're safe with me"
"Fine I'll get mickey dressed"
"No, I got it you get dressed"
When we were all ready, Chassidy's boyfriend Lenny pulled up in front of the house. He drove us to the first store which was "Save a Lot". We spent almost an hour in there. Then the last place we stopped at was Walmart because Chassidy had to pee. I watched her stuff for her. Mackenzie stayed in my eye view she was playing with the skip it. I told Chassidy that I was going to go take Mack to Checkers to get her a meal that was across the street. When I got out of the door, I didn't see Richard's car. Chassidy did say that he had work today and she was going to call a cab but.... why did he— I was interrupted by the sound of a familiar voice. Scott. He talked to Mac and said
"Hey Princesa"
"Daddy!" She ran up to him and hugged him, he looked up to me and gave me an evil smile. Then he got up and walked up to me and tried to kiss me. I turned my cheek and missed his lips on purpose. He then snaked his arms around my waist and gripped onto it and whispered "Now that wasn't nice, you thought that I won't find out that you were at that bitch's mom place. I'm not stupid Marie." Then he said aloud, trying to sound convincing. "Now if you don't mind babe, why don't we go eat"
"I'm not h—"
"Of course, you are, mickey you hungry?" He asked Mackenzie who was holding my hand. I didn't want to freak out and yell. I know this is just a facade. His true demons reveal themselves in the darkness of our house. I had to risk my life to protect her and my baby. When we got home Chassidy called me and Scott said "don't answer it." 2, 3, and 4 rings. Finally going to voicemail "Marie where the hell is you, please don't tell me he got you. Call me back to just tell me if you are safe"
I looked at Scott in fear of what he was going to do to me...but he did nothing. I think it was because Mac was still around. He said "Call her back and tell her that we are okay"
"Okay" I picked up the phone to tell her. It hurts my heart to lie to her. I can't cry because I don't want Mac to think anything was wrong.
I forgave Scott for what he did two months prior and ever since then he attempts to be sweet to me when he wants to be. I was really hungry so I asked Scott, who was next to me on the bed, "Babe can you go get me something to eat?"
"Sure, what do you want?"
"Hum....a breakfast burrito with some hash browns on the side."
"Alright, I'll be back"
"Thank you, babe I love you"
"I love you too"
"Damé beso"
I pucker my lips and he gave me a kiss before leaving the room. Fifteen minutes later he came up with my breakfast. I dug in instantly. Handling my burrito with two hands I bite into it. Scott glances at me and said "Damn slow down, you shouldn't be eating like that you might get fat again"
I finished my last bite, before looking up at him with a hurtful expression and asked
"Why did you say that?"
"It's not like I'm lying, you are getting fat again"
"I'm pregnant with YOUR child you jackass!"
"Watch it, Marie, I'm trying to be nice to you, but it's like you're asking to get hit" I didn't say anything to ruin our day. I pushed the breakfast tray away from me and said "I need to use the bathroom"
When I got up to go to open the door of our room he said "If Mac isn't up, wake her up and tell her to get dressed"
"Where are we going?"
"Chuck E. Cheeses for her birthday"
"But I was going to make her a cake"
"You can do it tomorrow; I don't feel like being home"
"Okay"
I put on my sky blue and white polka-dotted robe and headed down the hall to Mickey's room to see if she was up. When I opened the door that was next to me and Scott's room. I saw Mac on the floor rug playing a game on her tablet with headphones in. She looked up to me and said "Hey Mami"
"What you doing mickey?"
"Playing the dress-up game"
"Happy birthday baby girl"
"Thank you, Mami"
"Come give Mami a kiss"
She took off her headphones and got up on her two feet to come over to me. When she did, I squatted down to her level and she wrapped her arms around my neck and I wrapped my arms around her little body. She looked at my face and I smiled back at her and I said "Daddy wants us to get dressed, we're taking you out for your early birthday present"
"But my birthday is tomorrow"
"He knows, but it's a surprise to where we are taking you" With a surprised expression on her face she said "Really!!"
"Yeah now find something pretty to wear birthday girl"
"Okay"
"Mami is going to go use the bathroom then go get dressed too"
"Okay"
I closed the door and went to the bathroom that was next to her room. I did my business then got out of the room, and went back to the master bedroom. Scott glanced at me and asked, "Is she up?"
"Yeah I told her to get dressed"
"Did you tell her where we were going to take her?"
"No, because I didn't know if you wanted me to"
"Good, now let's get dressed"
When he and I were dressed I went to check on Mac, which she had her shirt on backward and mitch match socks on. I asked disappointed "Are you kidding me, Mac?"
"What at least I'm dressed"
"The only thing you got on right, is your tutu, come here" she did and I said
"Raise your hands"
She did and I took the shirt off her and put it back on her the right way. Then I lifted her up on her bed and got a pair of black Hanes socks for her and replaced the mitch match with these. Then I put on her black and pink boots along with her jacket, because it was the middle of July and it's still a bit chilly, spring isn't over yet. Her hair was already straightened so I just put on her hat. She was complaining "Mami I'm hot"
"You have to be bundled up, it's still cold"
"I don't need all this"
"No, you do. I can't afford for you to get sick, baby girl"
When we got to Chuck E. Cheese's, I got her a cup of coins to last all day. There were a lot of kids. She went to the ball pit first. As I watched her, I looked over to Scott who was glued to his phone texting, someone. I asked, "Who's that?"
"Oh um...I forgot to tell you I have work tomorrow, and I might be home around ten"
"What....but Scott....her birthday"
"I know but I need to go so I can put food on the table for y'all"
"That doesn't matter Scott, what about your daughter's 8th birthday"
"I'll give her a present, chill"
"Chill how the fuck can I chill when you always working and missing out in our family time?!"
"Marie....not now!"
"No, we are going to talk about this!"
"No, we are not" He gripped my wrist when he said that. I jerked back and said
"Never mind"
"Yeah, that's what I thought."
When I looked back at the ball pit, I didn't see Mac there. I said, "Where's Mackenzie!?" He looked up and said "What?"
"She's not there, she's gone Scott help me find her!"
He put his phone away quick and said "You go see on the left side and I'll go see on the right"
"Okay"
I looked in the ball pit and I went to the slides, she wasn't there, then I checked where the Skee-Ball game was, no Mackenzie. I started to get nervous. Then I turned my head to the left and saw her at one of the staff, cashing in her tickets for bears. I went up to her and yelled out "Scott I found her!" I came up to her and said "Mackenzie Angelica Hughes, don't you run off like that!"
She turned around and said "I'm sorry Mami, I was just getting you and daddy a present "
I saw Scott come up to us and said "Mackenzie that wasn't funny you almost got us scared"
"I'm sorry daddy, I got y'all a gift"
She handed Scott a frog and gave me a fluffy panda. I immediately teared up, I couldn't help but hug her and burst into tears.
