I don't know why I came here. When I got this crappy little car that Charles can't trace I didn't know where to go, but I just seemed to keep heading this way. The place I once ran from because I thought I was in danger is now the place I'm running to because I'm in real danger. As scared as I was of the enemies the Broken Demons had they weren't real enemies. The real enemies are the ones beside you who trick you to believe you're safe and then they pull the rug. After leaving the ER with Tobias' broken arm in a cast, my forehead stitched and my ribs wrapped I ditched my car, found this one for sale on a driveway and gave him the cash before hitting the road.
As I drive through the town I once called home it looks so different from when I was last here. Tobias sleeps in the back seat, exhausted from traveling and the pain meds I've given him for his arm. He's such a brave little boy and I'm never going to let him feel pain again, I know it'll be difficult but Charles will never lay a hand on him again. Luckily Charles doesn't know where I moved to Boston from so he won't know to look for me here.
"Mommy? I'm hungry." I look in the rear view mirror and see Tobias is awake, I check the time
"Ok little one, we'll get something to eat and then you can have some more medicine, how is your arm feeling?" I smile like it's just a normal day
"It's ok." He replies
"Where are we?" He asks
"North Carolina, before you were born I used to live here with some friends." I explain. I drive passed the diner, the club guys often had lunch there, so it's best to avoid it. Although this town is owned by the biker club so I can't hide from them for long, maybe coming here was a mistake. I see a bakery, that wasn't here when I lived here, so hopefully they won't know me. I park the car and help Tobias out, he holds my hand as we walk inside.
"Hello?" I call as we step up to the counter, my stomach rumbles at the amazing smell of all the fresh baked goods, I've been getting food for Tobias, but I haven't had much, trying to save my money. After buying the car and paying for gas I don't have much left.
"Sorry my buns were burning." A young girl says breathlessly as she rushes through the door from the back, then blushes at her comment and I can't help but giggle
"What can I get you?" She smiles as she dusts the flour off her apron.
"Hey little man what happened to the arm?" She asks looking at Tobias, who looks straight at me
"We had a little accident, but we're ok aren't we?" I smile and he nods. I order him some food and we sit at one of the tables, I watch as the girl runs around rushes off her feet, as customers come and go, luckily no one I know.
"Are you alright?" I ask as she wipes the sweat from her forehead with a towel
"Yeah, I just didn't expect to be so busy, I'm trying to hire some one to help out but no one yet, I don't suppose you want a job?" She asks
"Actually I do." I reply before I can stop myself. Do I want a job? Ok I don't have a lot of money left and I need it to feed Tobias, but a job could help Charles find me
"Do you have a resume?" She asks
"No I don't." I sigh
"Here, fill out an application while you eat." She smiles as she brings over a few pastries
"I didn't order these." I say as she places them down, I cant waste the money
"I know, they're on the house, think of it as getting to know the product while you fill out the form." She smiles. I hesitate, this isn't a good idea
"Umm, if you hired some one, would you pay them by check or cash?" I ask nervously
"Heck if it means I don't have to run around and do everything on my own I'll pay you however you want." She smiles, she seems so nice.
"I would have to figure out child care for my son." I reply
"Well until you do how about I hire him too? He could be the official guinea pig for all the new recipes I want to try."
"You need help that bad?" I ask, no one is this kind
"Can you start today?" She smirks. So instead of stopping for lunch and then, well I don't know what I had planned, I end up spending the rest of the day helping Molly. I don't know how she managed so long on her own, the place has been constantly busy with customers and phone orders that we haven't stopped. Molly has been so sweet to Tobias, asking him to help her make cookies and to test different things, I can't remember the last time I saw him this happy. That's when it hits me, I thought I was staying with Charles to give Tobias a family, for him to be happy, but he was just as scared as I was, now I know I've done the right thing by leaving.
"I'll see you in the morning." Molly smiles as Tobias and I walk out the front door
"Good night." I smile. When the door closes behind me I realise we don't have anywhere to stay and I don't have enough money left for a room at the motel, not that I would want Tobias there if it's still as seedy as I remember. I sigh as I take Tobias' hand and we walk back to the car, looks like we're sleeping there tonight.
After using Tobias' jacket to make a pillow for him I cover him with my jacket
"I'm sorry we have to sleep in the car little one." I say as I lean over to kiss his forehead
"It's ok mommy, I had fun today." He smiles up at me. I tug on my thick sweater and lean back in the drivers seat before trying to get some sleep. We may be sleeping in a car, but for once we're safe.
