The sound of mum calling me for breakfast was irritating. The constant 'Ariana, wake up! Breakfast!' was starting to get on my nerves. I knew that I should have just gotten up, get changed and gone downstairs so she would stop screaming, but that seemed like it would have taken too much energy out of me that early in the morning.

What time was it anyway? Too early, the clock on my left had bright blue blocks with the numbers 8:30 on it. The screaming was still going on so I shouted, "Okay, I'm getting up now!"

And so I got up, walking to my bathroom to have a shower.

The warm splashes of water felt good on my cold face in the cold winter morning.

Ten minutes later, I was changed and heading down the stairs. The sun wasn't up and it was a pretty crappy day. The grey clouds were hanging low around the roof of the houses in our little cul-de-sac. I knew that because this morning, just like every other, mum had the curtains open.

As usual, breakfast was already set for mum and I.

I had no brothers or sisters because mum was single. When she was pregnant with me, she was only twenty-one and her boyfriend fled when he found out.

Sixteen years later, she still hasn't heard anything from him.

She was pouring herself coffee when I walked into the kitchen. There was no doorway or anything. Our house was pretty big for just the two of us.

I took a seat at the head of the table and waited for mum to join me. When she finally felt my presence in the room she came over and gave me a good-morning kiss, then went to her seat on the other end.

"So Ariana, what are we going to do today?" mum asked. I honestly did not know, but I didn't want to spend my Saturday with her. I do love her and all, but she can be pretty boring at times.

So I said, "I don't know. Maybe I can go over to Nina's house to study and hang out. I'll ring her and ask when we finish breakfast and I'll get her to ring Neveah so we can do our cross curriculum assignments." I didn't intend to say that but it was a pretty good idea. And at that time I really needed to start my cross curriculum assignment because it is worth fifty percent of our final grade.

Ten minutes later, I finished my breakfast and called Nina, her mum wasn't home and neither were her two brothers, so it worked out fine.

Apparently Neveah had a date, which wasn't surprising due to the amount of boys she got. Nina and I were weren't exactly looking for romance at our age anyway. But if Neveah really wanted to skip study time and hanging with us, then I wasn't going to stop her. Nev was smart, approachable and pretty. As in drop-dead-gorgeous-- hazel coloured bambi eyes, honey-blond hair (that was of course as dead straight as any other girl in our school with the exception of me), natural tanned skin and Angelina Jolie lips.

Neveah, Nina or I weren't in the popular/ rich kid's crowd. Neveah was popular with the guys-of course-but that was it. The only time the popular kids would talk to us was to ask for the answers to homework or tests because apparently, we were the nerds. Well I should say I am the nerd. I hated the status, but I would rather take the nerd than the ugly geek.

My looks weren't all that great, which is why I wasn't so popular-- dark brown, curly hair I have-again-dark brown eyes that is not the bambi type, normal sized lips, caramel coloured skin and a curvy but not stick thin body. That didn't classify as ugly right? Oh, and I forgot to mention I'm quite tall. Well for my age anyway.

By noon, Nina and I had studied and started our cross curriculum's, which was, considering how hard it was, pretty good. Neveah still hadn't arrived yet which meant she either liked the guy who asked her out and decided to stay the entire length of the date or, he was a total douche bag and she left him there--wherever there is-- and went home.
