Ariel's POV
"ARIEL, GET UP! YOU'LL BE LATE FOR SCHOOL!"
Lora called for me from the kitchen as my eyes slowly started to open as the light of the sun lit up my room from the small crevice of the blinds. I sat up as I rubbed my eyes to wake myself up. I got out of bed with my eyes almost shut as I made my way into the bathroom. I got ready and headed out into the kitchen."Good morning sleepy head." Lisa smiled at me as she gave me a plate of eggs and bacon. My mouth started to water as I looked down at my food.
"Jesus you look like you never ate anything in your entire life." Lora said as she poured herself a cup of coffee in her cadet uniform.
"Leave her alone, remember what i told you last night." Lisa pointed the spatula at her with a demanding look on her face. Lora just looked down and walked to the table.
I just stood there, still sleepy, as I was about to lose balance. Lisa caught me.
"Here have a cup of coffee to wake you up." She smiled as she handed me the mug.
"COFFEE STUNTS HER GROWTH!" Lora called out from the dining room table.
"No it doesn't, so shut up!" Lisa yelled back and turned to me with a smile on her face.
I turned around and walked to the dining room table. I started to eat my breakfast as Lisa washes the dishes and Lora reads the daily morning news paper.
Lora takes a sip from her coffee and she says to herself, "Holy Shit..." as her eyes went wide.
"What happened?" I stopped eating to ask as I look at her face with concern and worry.
"A gruesome homicide was committed last night..." Lora looked up from the newspaper to Lisa and I. Lisa stopped doing the dishes to hear the unexpected and tragic news.
"A family of 5 were slaughtered and decapitated. Two boys, ages 14 and 6, the mom and dad, and a grandmother. Bodies were found 3 miles away from their home, with heads missing." Lora placed the newspaper down to sink in what she just read.
"Do you think they're going to let you work on the case?" Lisa asked as she stood by the doorway between the kitchen and dining room.
Lora let out a big sigh.
"Yep, no doubt. Plus, looks like I have to go to the lab and see them perform the autopsy to get information and do a report to update the town. We have to catch that son of a bitch." She grabbed her plate and walked into the kitchen to clean up.I sat there, thinking about what was said to me. Was there really a serial killer in Coral Falls? This town is known to have the least rate of crime and murder. That's why every year, people move here. Hell, it's why we moved here.
"Well, I better get going." Lora said as she grabbed her utility belt, badge and keys to her patrol car. She hugged Lisa goodbye and gave me a noogie.
"Hey stop that you messed up my hair bro, took my 15 minutes to do this!" I complained as Lora burst out laughing.
"My bad kid. See you soon. You better be good. And you better hurry up, you don't want to be late." She walked out of the house and went off.
I got up and grabbed my bag. I kissed Lisa goodbye on the cheek as I walked down the steps of our house to the bus stop.
"Ariel wait!" I turned around and saw Lisa running towards me.
"I forgot to give you this." She handed me $5 that she gives me every morning for lunch. I hugged her one last time and thanked her and made my way to the bus stop.
As I was walking, I started to think about what Lora said, about the serial killer on the loose.
I have to be careful.
