by the time Jenny had dropped Rhi off at Amber's house, it was around noon. Amber was waiting at the front door and gave Rhi a weak smile before the girls walked up to Amber's room.
"it's so strange how we can't remember all that much. damn, maybe drinking was a bad idea," Amber said with a groan, rubbing her temples. "and now here we are, trying to solve this little puzzle piece by piece."
"yeah, no kidding. i can't even remember my own MOM picking me up from that damn party. so, so weird," Rhi muttered. she still found it incredible that her mom never suspected once that she had been drunk, or at least a little buzzed.
"i can start calling people so we can get right to the point. and then we can see what happens from there." Amber started scrolling through her contacts until she landed on a girl named Maria. "hello, Maria? hey, you were at that party last night, were there any people that had hair dye there? i don't know, like dyeing peoples' hair?"
after a moment Amber hung up. "nope, Maria said that she didn't see anyone wielding hair dye or offering hair dye to the partygoers. this is getting weird. i don't know how else your hair could've just magically turned white."
by the time Amber had called about ten more people, an hour had already passed and Rhi was feeling pretty skeptical.
"Amber, maybe this party was a bad idea. none of this weird stuff would ever have happened if we had just stayed home and never gone to that James what's-his-name's house. i never do parties anyway."
"Rhi, you can't just think like that. it was a good party, except for the blacking out part," Amber said gently. "now, why don't you go back home and take a nap? i might do the same thing, that's why i suggested it."
"ok, that does sound like a good idea right now. i'll text my mom to come pick me up."
—————————
"that was an awfully short time at Amber's. i would've guessed that you would want to stay there for the rest of the day," Jenny exclaimed on the way back home.
"yeah, we figured that we're both pretty tired still from the party, and we want to take a nap." her face was burning from embarrassment, and she looked away so her mom wouldn't see. if she did, then she would immediately suspect that Rhi had broken her promise about drinking, and would think that Rhi was currently hungover.
"oh, um, ok. hey Rhiannon, you look a little different today. i just felt like commenting on that."
oh shit, i hope she didn't see that white streak...
"i can't quite put my finger on it, but maybe i'm just fooling myself," Jenny said with a smile. Rhi breathed an inaudible sigh of relief. that almost turned into a train wreck.
when they pulled back into the driveway, Rhi beat her mom to the door with surprising speed. okay... that was interesting. i usually never move that fast.
Jenny unlocked the door and Rhi walked in, heading straight for the stairs.
————————
after inspecting her white streak in the bathroom before taking a nap, Rhi tried to pinpoint what Jenny found so different about her. considering that she couldn't remember the last half of the party, it wouldn't surprise her if she found yet another unpleasant discovery.
but she was soon wrong.
Rhi quickly leaned forward, staring into her reflection. her eyes... they had...
changed color.
not entirely, but there was at least a little bit of change. Rhi glimpsed flecks of gold in her green eyes, almost replacing the black veins that surrounded the pupil. like the white streak, it wasn't incredibly noticing, but still very alarming. Rhi almost thought she was hallucinating until she splashed water over her face.
