once Rhi got home from school, she received a call from Kassidy. she immediately answered. "um, hello?"
"are you nervous about the full moon? i know it's coming tomorrow, but hang in there. Jace is also nervous, but at least you two get to go through your first changes together. i didn't have that luxury."
"yeah, i know." then, the black werewolf popped up into her head. "hey, when can we discuss the black werewolf? i think i remember his name was... Malice? i could hardly concentrate at school today because of.... him."
"right, Malice... didn't both you and Jace have a dream with him in it? i swear to God, there's way too much stuff going on right now..."
"i know. i'm really stressed out. what am i gonna do? i don't think i can possibly go to school tomorrow. i'm going to have a severe anxiety attack if i don't get myself under control! i just can't believe this is happening." and then Rhi found herself crying.
"hey hey, calm down. how about i can come pick you up and we can talk about some things over at our house?" her voice was so sweet and gentle, and that immediately made Rhi calm down, at least temporarily. "ok, yeah. sure."
"alright, i'll be over in about less than 10 minutes. hang tight." then she hung up, and Rhi awaited her friend's arrival.

"so, how are you doing? you've been drinking that lemonade like it's the last thing on earth to drink." Kassidy was sitting next to her, and Jace had just walked in. he looked concerned, but Rhi could tell that he too was panicked about tomorrow night.
"i'm great, just feeling a little... scared, about tomorrow." she took another sip of her drink. "we should probably start discussing things now. i really want to talk about this."
"are you sure? because we can give you more time to chill out..." Jace countered.
"nope, i'm fine. let's get on with this. it's basically the reason why i wanted to come over." she took a long swig of her lemonade and finished it.
"right, well, let's get onto it. we need to figure out who this Malice bastard is and why the hell he bit us," Kassidy announced.
"woah woah, slow your roll there Kas," Jace said with a chuckle. "aren't we also supposed to be talking about tomorrow night?"
"this isn't a joke, Jace. we need to discuss who the hell bit all of us. i never really considered it myself when i first got bitten a month ago, and unlike you two, i never received a strange dream from the very monster himself!"
the siblings started arguing, and for a split second Rhi didn't know what to do. then she whistled loudly and they both stopped talking. "we can discuss both things, because they're both equally important. got it?" the siblings nodded, and Rhi carried on. "so, we can start by looking around for any tall, largely built men with shaggy black hair and piercing yellow eyes. it seems simple enough, but it may be harder than it actually is. so we need to team up and figure it out."
"but what about tomorrow night? i'm sure this Malice guy is a cool dude and all but maybe we should focus on the thought of turning into giant beasts first thing tomorrow night," Jace interjected. Kassidy sighed. "we're getting to that J. but Rhi has a point here in talking about the one beast that managed to turn us all into these things."
of course Rhi knew that Jace was only acting this way because he was incredibly nervous, just like she was, and that instantly made her feel immensely relieved at that thought.
"so what guy here in town would fit that beast's description?" Jace asked himself, and Kassidy pulled out her phone. "i'm going to look up some things, maybe find some guys in town that have those features," she said, but Rhi wasn't sure that she'd be able to find anything. but after a few moments, she gasped and said, "found a few results."
both Rhi and Jace scooted closer to her to look at the image, and they both gasped in unison. the man in the picture had shaggy jet black hair that went down to his shoulders, and his eyes held a cold green look in them. wait, green?
"no, this definitely isn't the right guy. this Malice thing has piercing yellow eyes, the type that can stare into your soul," Rhi said.
Kassidy sighed. "well damn, of course i wouldn't know. maybe you two can help me on that later. Rhi, Jace, i have some important tips to share with you on your first shift tomorrow night. it's time we started discussing that."
Rhi nodded reluctantly, although she should be excited to hear something from the other girl. she supposed that she was still feeling stressed out about it, even though they had talked about something else to temporarily take their minds off of it.
"so what do we need to do? besides eating a crap ton of meat, of course," Jace said with a nervous laugh.
Kassidy sat up in the chair and faced them both. "eating plenty of meat is essential to keep our beasts satiated, but you two also need to make sure that you have an abundance of energy to keep your beasts strong and fit during the first change. i quickly realized that before mine, and i was almost too late to fulfill those needs, and i woke up in someone's chicken coop with blood and feathers plastered to my face. now that was something else."
Rhi gasped. "is that going to happen to us? you know, eating innocent animals without even remembering it?"
"well, yeah. it's possible that your beast can eat up to a dozen or more animals in just one night," Kassidy said. "and we have to be careful with our location so we don't get too close to the town and terrorize everyone."
"or possibly eat someone," Jace muttered quietly. Rhi couldn't tell if that was supposed to be a dark joke or not.
after sitting and talking for a little while longer, Rhi declared that she had to go home, and this time Jace took her back. "so, on a scale of 1 to 10, how anxiety-crazed are you about tomorrow night?" he asked her as soon as they pulled out of the driveway.
"um... solid 15," Rhi chuckled rather nervously. her fingers were shaking a little.
"hah, yeah me too. i don't know how the hell my sister seems so calm about it. i mean yeah, she actually was a little freaked out before her first shift a month ago, but i feel like the two of us are really going through something. maybe it's because of that Malice guy, the thing that bit all three of us yet somehow only came to our dreams."
Rhi nodded. "yeah, i honestly wouldn't be surprised. that giant black wolf freaks me out."
when they finally pulled back into Rhi's driveway, she was suddenly eager to get back into the house and lock herself in the basement until the day after tomorrow night. "hey wait, before you go, where are we all going tomorrow night for the...shifts?"
"oh, i'm actually not sure. Kas said that we would go into some secluded part of the forest, maybe a few miles away from town. you'll have to shoot her a text tomorrow." he started to back out, and Rhi turned around to walk up to the door. but before she could reach the doorknob, Jace called her name again and she turned back around.
"if you know what's good for you Rhi, don't come to school tomorrow." then he drove off.
