16; the other werewolves

"WHAT? ok ok, this is A LOT to process... you're saying that Kassidy is your sister, she's the owner of THAT jacket i've kept for two days, AND to top it off, she's ALSO a werewolf???"

Jace nodded slowly. "yes, it's all true. i know it's a lot to handle, but please bear with me..."

"i don't know if i can, though. i feel so jarred and full of shock that my life is becoming one big fairytale. first of all, werewolves are not supposed to be real! second of all... i'm terrified of what i'm becoming. i was a vegetarian not even a week ago, and now i suddenly adore meat!"  Rhi was now sitting on the grass, legs pulled up to her chest as her whole body grew numb. she couldn't tell if it was from the cold or from the shock of this entire new revelation.

Jace sat down next to her. "i'm sorry that i shocked you so roughly. i thought you already had a sense that Kassidy was also a werewolf..."

"how was i supposed to know?? i couldn't smell it on her at all. and i see her every day!"

"she wears extremely heavy amounts of a scentless perfume called Mask, all so she could hide her werewolf smell in case there were others nearby. others like you."

Rhi nodded slowly. "ok, that at least makes some sense. but did she ever know that i was a werewolf?"

Jace shrugged. "i dunno, you'd have to ask her that yourself. say, why don't you come by our house, at least for thirty minutes, and we can discuss everything with you. does that sound good?"

well, it's not like i've got anything better to do now. "sure, i'll come. i'm eager to find out what Kassidy thinks of all this. oh, and i should bring her jacket too."

after Jace drove her back to his house, Rhi saw Kassidy's dark blue Jeep parked in the driveway, and she felt nervous.

although there was absolutely no reason to be.

they walked into the house, with Jace announcing that he was home and brought a guest over, and Kassidy walked downstairs and gasped when she saw Rhi in the living room. "oh my gosh, Rhi! what brings you here to our pleasurable home?"

"oh, your name is Rhi?" Jace asked, a little baffled, and she nodded. "yeah, but my real name is Rhiannon. everyone just calls me Rhi for short."

"wow... it's kinda pretty."

Rhi felt a little lost for words, until Kassidy saved the day by jumping in between them. "so what's going on?"

she realized that she hadn't answered Kassidy's question. "oh, i'm here because i uh... i met your brother Jace earlier today at... Target, so he wanted to bring me over here."

"she knows that we're werewolves, Kassidy. and so is she," Jace suddenly interjected.

the whole room went silent, and Rhi suddenly felt like leaving. the uncomfortable quiet stretched on until Rhi felt Kassidy's eyes staring into her. that's when Rhi fully noticed the other girl's eyes; they were golden like hers, but with a twinge of blue around the pupil. Rhi guessed that that had been her original eye color until the werewolf genes took over.

"you... you're a werewolf too? how long have you been one?" Kassidy asked quietly, and Rhi shifted nervously from foot to foot. "only about a week. your brother said that he had also been one for only a week."

"that's right," Kassidy murmured, her eyes now shifting over to Jace. "did you tell her how you'd been turned?"

Jace looked over at Rhi, who was now eager to hear his story. "i was out taking a walk in the forest one night, not too far from this neighborhood, when i heard a deep growl resonating through the trees around me. i thought it was my imagination, so i kept walking without a care in the world. until twigs started to snap, and i walked faster to get away from it. but then i tripped over something and i fell to the ground, and then there was a giant black pelt over me and fierce yellow eyes... then the world went black." he took a deep breath. "next thing i knew, i woke up in my bed, not remembering what happened that night. it was so strange. i couldn't quite figure it out, until Kassidy figured it out before i even did..."
