at school the next day, during math specifically, Rhi tried as hard as she could to listen to Mr. Barrens talking on and on about proportions, but failed for the hundredth time. she still kept thinking about that coyote last night, and how it barely took her a single breath to scare it off. she almost felt proud of herself, scaring off that vermin before it could root around in their trash any longer.

"Miss West, i asked you a question," Mr. Barrens suddenly said, snapping Rhi out of her thoughts. she looked up at the teacher to see him staring at her with a condescending and stern look. "sorry, what was the question?"

"i asked whether it's true or false that a proportion is the definition of a part of a whole."

Rhi nodded slowly. "um, yes, that is in fact true. any other questions you want to ask?"

Mr. Barrens narrowed his eyes. "well well, that's actually correct. good job Miss West. ok, next question. Katy, what is the meaning of a fraction..."

Rhi tuned out again for the rest of class, mindlessly copying down notes until the bell rang, and she quickly packed up and hurried out of the classroom. she was about to head to the restroom when she caught a whiff of a very strange scent. she was still getting used to her heightened senses, so she followed the scent trail all the way into the restroom, much to her fortunate luck. there was a jacket laying on the floor, and that seemed to be the source of the scent. she snatched it up and took it into one of the stalls, then pressed it up onto her face and closed her eyes, deeply inhaling the scent over and over.

female. showered just this morning. strawberry shampoo and conditioner. chocolate chip waffles. other people's scents. good organ health. paper. wood...

there was a jumble of other scents, but Rhi wouldn't have enough time to distinguish the rest of them. she did her business, then saw a single strand of hair on the jacket and narrowed her eyes. it was long and brown.

Rhi left the restroom with the jacket in hand, with the scent still in her system for some reason, and she made it into her next class just before the bell rang. she was super thankful that no one had witnessed or heard her aggressively smelling the unknown jacket, and she stuffed it into her backpack just as the teacher began to explain the lesson for the day.

once again, she couldn't focus in class, and she was thankful when the bell rang for lunch. she sure felt starved now.

Rhi met up with Amber at their usual spot in the cafeteria, and Rhi had gotten a burger with fries and a water today. Amber's eyes widened. "oh my god, are you... are you eating normally again?" that made Rhi burst out laughing and she nodded. "yes, i'm eating normally once again. i finally decided to quit being a vegetarian, and i'm actually really grateful i did so. i missed meat."

now it was Amber's turn to laugh. "wow, i totally wasn't expecting THAT plot twist. i could've sworn just a year ago that you decided to neglect meat and stand up for all the cows and pigs and chickens."

"indeed, i did neglect meat."

"ok sorry, i'm gonna have to change the subject here but did you SEE or HEAR about a sudden change around here?" Amber asked, slurping excitedly on her chocolate milk.

Rhi tilted her head. "um, no..?"

"well... THERE'S A NEW KID!" Amber declared, clapping her hands excitedly. "and i heard it's a he. isn't that exciting and awesome?"

Rhi nodded. "yeah, sure. i wonder who he is, and if he's even cute at all."

"oh i'm sure he is. it's a known fact and total cliché that all new boys are either cute or hot. i hope this one's hot though." she bit into her burger voraciously, and Rhi did the same. she had really really missed burgers too.
