*SET IN 1940's WARTIME*
I sighed as i served yet another drunk young man full of himself trying to hit on me. I walked back to the bar, ignoring wolf whistles and prying eyes as i picked up yet another tray and served it to another table. I was a little caught up in ordering another round for a table when i saw my best friend Peggy walk in through the doors. The loud drunken men singing in the bar stopped as all attention went to her as not many women came in here dressed up and looking as beautiful as her.
"Captain" She said to the blonde haired man sitting at the bar. "Agent Carter" The man replied. Instantly i knew were id seen his face before. He was the infamous Steve Rogers that Peggy never stopped going on about. A small smiled went over my face as i was now seeing this chemistry between them. "Ma'am" steve's friend who was sat beside him piped up but got no acknowledgement from Peggy. This made me giggle slightly.
"Howard has some equipment for you to try. Tomorrow morning?" Peggy said to Steve and i stood there with my arms crossed watching her speak all professionally. "sounds good" Steve replied. "I see you top squad is prepping for duty" Peggy said. "You don't like music?" The guy with brown hair asked her. I looked at him a bit closer, studying his face. "I do, actually. I might even, when this is all over, go dancing" Peggy retorted, never once taking her gaze off Steve."then what are we waiting for?" He tried his luck once more before getting shut down. "The right partner. 0800, Captain" Peggy said before walking away from them a bit. "Yes, ma'm. I'll be there" Steve said. "I'm invisible. I'm...I'm turning into you. It's like some horrible dream" i heard the man complaining which made me chuckle a little as i served the round of drinks to the table just behind where they were sitting. "Don't take it so hard. Maybe she's got a friend" Steve said and i smiled. That she does have.
"hey stranger" i said walking up behind her. "Y/N!" she said happily and wrapping her arms around me tightly. "it's been so long since i've seen you!" she said, a sad smile falling upon her face. "i know, i'm sorry Peggy but i really have to be careful with who i see" i said quietly. S.H.I.E.L.D had sent me on an undercover operation to try and sniff out german spies. It turns out that working as a waitress you over hear lots of interesting things. "i wish you'd never taken this job" She said sadly and i nodded. "i couldn't do what you do Pegs, that front line thing isn't for me so i had to find a way to help" i said and she sighed. "how is Howard?" i asked her and she chuckled. "he's the usual, lady killer yet somehow also a genius" she said and i laughed. "it's just unfair to be intelligent and look good" i said and we both chuckled. "so i have been thinking . . ." Peggy started but she was interrupted by somebody coming up and standing besides me. "Can i buy you lovely ladies a drink" he slurred and Peggy scoffed. "we're good, thanks" she said sarcastically and the man chuckled. "i insist" he said, getting a little closer to me than i was comfortable with. I turned to him and was about to speak my mind when the man who was sitting with Steve earlier came over, placing his hand on his shoulder tightly. "i think they said they were fine" he said threateningly. They had a bit of a stare off before the creepy man backed down and i looked up to Steve's friend. "Thank you but i had it covered" i said to him. "i'm sure you did, but it seems you work hard enough, and that's without annoying guys like him hassling you" he said smiling at me. "Y/N" i said holding my hand out. "Bucky" he said, shaking my hand before kissing it. "you haaad to ruin it didn't you" i said chuckling and he laughed. "i'm sorry, i take it back! forgive me for intruding on your feminism" he said cheekily and i laughed genuinely for the first time in a while. "i'm going to go and talk to Steve" Peggy said quietly walking off, leaving me with Bucky.
We chatted for what seemed like ages, i was able to finish work early so we sat and spoke about anything and everything. He was funny, kind, compassionate and very loyal. He told me of stories about him and Steve and how they'd been best friends for years, similar to Peggy and I. But he also told me of how he was captured and how he has to go back and fight. A great sadness within me filled, i already felt attached to him, i didn't want him to go back. I had a terrible feeling. As we reached my doorstep, the fun evening began to turn into a sad one. "bucky" i said softly as i took ahold of his hand. He looked up at me with a soft smile. "i've barely known you for a few hours, but you've made me laugh more than any man has ever, i can already tell you're a good man" i said to him. "you're an angel, doll" he said to me and i shook my head. "when you come back, i would very much like to pick up where we left off" i said to him with a smile, and a smile spread across his face. "and where would that be?" he questioned and i smiled at him cheekily. I placed my hand on the side of his face and kissed him gently on the lips. His warm hand took ahold of my cold hand as he deepened the kiss. He smiled as he pulled away "i'd very much like that" he said and i couldn't wipe the smile off my face. I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him tightly, savouring his warmth and smell. "i'll be right here, waiting for you" i said to him. "i'll fight for you doll, i'll fight to make it home to you" he said and i smiled. He kissed me once more before turning around to go home. "stay safe" i muttered once he was out of earshot. I opened my front door and from that moment onwards i couldn't wipe the smile off my face . . . that was until i heard of the tragic news.
*TIME SKIP TO MODERN DAY*
"honestly Steve, give it a rest" Sam said to Steve as they walked into a bar laughing, Bucky trailing behind them. I was putting through a food order to the kitchen when i noticed no body was behind the bar. I sighed, finishing what i was doing before rushing over. "what can you i get for you guys?" i asked happily and two of the three men looked startled as they looked up to me. "your usual?" i asked Sam happily and he nodded, chuckling. I turned away for a second to grab Sam his drink but i couldn't help but notice how shady the other guys were acting. "and for you two?" i asked them smiling meekly. "y/n, this is Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes" Sam introduced us and i smiled at them softly. "how do you two know each other?" Steve questioned seriously. "we've been friends since we were kids" Sam said and i chuckled "with slightly different career paths, isn't that right Falcon" i said teasing him and he chuckled. "it's impossible" Bucky said quietly. He looked up at me and started at me sadly. "excuse him, he's going through a lot at the moment" Sam said and dismissed how weird they were acting. "when does your shift finish?" Sam asked me and i looked at the clock. "half an hour, wait for me?" i asked Sam, batting my eyelids. "go on then, can you fix these two idiots with two pints of larger?" Sam asked and i nodded, serving them both and then walking off to serve food, clean tables and just do general bits and bobs until my shift ended. I hung my apron round the back, grabbing my coat and car keys before walking back round the other side of the bar and slinging my arm around Sam's shoulders. "how's it going here? any secrets you want to spill?" Sam asked me and i quickly slapped him and told him to shut up. "you don't have keep secrets around these guys, surely you recognise them" sam said and i looked towards them once more, my gaze landing on Bucky more and more, something drawing me towards him. "are they your new superhero friends?" i said seriously and Sam looked at me with a blank face. "erm... Captain America?" Sam said pointing at Steve and i studied his face. It was so familiar, but i couldn't place it. "ahh that's cool" i replied simply and Sam stared as me in disbelief. "you're the only girl i've ever met not to go crazy about him" Sam said and i chuckled. "sorry Cap but you're just not my type" i said patting him on the shoulder. He couldn't help but chuckle as he stood up from his bar stool and hug me tightly. "erm. . ." i questioned being held in his arms. "Sam!" i whisper hissed at him. "what are you doing?" Sam questioned as Steve finally let go of me. "i'm sorry, you just remind me of somebody i used to know" He replied smiling at me. "that's great but id appreciate a warning next time" i said and chuckled softly. "oh Sam that reminds me, i need to show you something!" i said and grabbed his hand, leading him off.
*3RD PERSON*
"What the fuck" Bucky muttered under his breath as Y/N walked away. "she's exactly the same as she was, kind, gently, funny but feisty" Steve commented. "yes and you just hugged her randomly!" Bucky retorted. "you're not the only one who lost her" Steve snapped which upset Bucky. "how is she here, same name, same personality, exactly the same body" Bucky said and Steve raised his eyebrow at the end comment. "i don't know, but we've got to find out" Steve said and Bucky nodded in agreement.
