High school AU

James' pov

I shouldn't have said yes to coming. I barely even know how to dance.

Looking around at the group of sweaty, moving bodies, I couldn't help but feel alone.

And scared.

Really scared.

All of my friends had found their own group to hang out with, so I was left standing off to the side, watching other people have the time of their lives.

Walking back over to the snack table for what felt like the millionth time, I considered the possibility of me just walking home.

Even if I did live a good hour walk away from the school, not to mention it was a frigid 20° outside.

I had just stuffed another handful of gummy bears into a cup, when one of the jocks of the school ran straight into me.

Which sent me and my gummy bears flying across the ground.

Getting up and brushing myself off, I quickly turned back to the jock, ready to put him in his place.

But he had already disappeared into the crowd before I got the chance to give him a piece of my mind.

Probably making out with the head cheerleader. I thought to myself, kneeling back down to clean up the gummy bears.

When I was about halfway through cleaning up the gooey mess, another pair of hands started gathering them up too.

Expecting to see one of my friends who finally decided to find me, I automatically said,

"Nice of you to finally show u-"

I cut off after looking up into an unfamiliar set of chocolate eyes.

The boy had a smile on his face, as he finished plopping the last gummy bears into the cup.

He then stood up, offering his hand out to me.

I graciously accepted, and maybe held on for a little too long.

"Do you wanna dance?" He asked, the small smile still gracing his face.

"Um I don't really know how. I'm really bad at it" I responded, scratching the back of my neck awkwardly.

"That's fine," His smile grew wider, "It just gives me an excuse to hold you tighter.

I blushed brightly at the comment, but accepted his hand as he walked me out to the dance floor.

Perfect by Ed Sheeran had just started playing over the speakers, and I couldn't help but hear the similarities to what I was looking at right now.

"So, uh, what's your name?" I asked shyly.

"Adam. What's yours cutie?"

My face grew a shade darker as I quietly responded, "James".

"Cute name to match a cute boy." He winked.
