Game Night

James' pov

It was all going downhill faster than you could say "Monopoly".

We had begun this game in high spirits, and a peaceful competitive air throughout the room.

Three hours and a lot of caffeine later, insanity had set in.

All of our other friends had left a while ago, trying to get home at a decent hour of the night, but I had refused to move from my spot until I had been crowned victor.

My strategies so far had been successful, annoying people until they gave up, or getting enough of their money until they went bankrupt and had to leave.

Everyone, that is, except Adam.

He was relentless in his game playing, and strategic enough to know how to get around my tricks.

The board was covered with houses on every possible square, a stack of fake money in the middle, and random snacks brought in previously to the event.

Adam had just landed on one of my hotels, worth $300 in rent, and a grin plastered my face as he handed the three bills over.

"Get that stupid look off your face, you didn't even make a dent in my income," Adam glared.

My sly grin grew as I leaned in to retort.

"Actually, according to the numbers now, I'm $1000 richer than you are, so suck on that sweetie."

"You're keeping track of how much money I have? Who even does that?" Adam questioned, taking a swig of Mountain Dew.

"Only the best" My eyelashes fluttered comically as I leaned my head down to rest on the palm of my hand.

Adam muttered something under his breath.

"What was that?"

A flash of embarrassment crossed Adam's face, before returning to his normal features.

"Uh, nothing. I didn't say anything at all."

"Really?" I leaned in closer, both arms on either side of the board, "Cause it sounded like you said something along the lines of 'why do I love you?'"

Panic shined in Adam's eyes, and it was noticeable from his voice too when he spoke.

"Um... no, I didn't... say that."

I paused for a moment, considering what I could do next.

"Well that's too bad." I finally responded, "I was gonna say I love you too, but you obviously don't feel the same way."

I moved back to my side of the board, pretending to pout as Adam sputtered for a few moments.

"Wait, James-"

"No no, it's fine, you just don't care about me the same way I do for you. I'll be fine, I've handled rejection before."

"James-"

"Really, you don't have to spare my feelings, I've been hurt by men like you before, I can take it. I-"

"JAMES" Adam burst out.

I hadn't expected the outburst, especially coming from Adam, and the shout made me take a stuttering stop in surprise.

Adam stood up to step over the forgotten game-board, coming to kneel in front of me, and clutch my face in his hands.

"You really are an idiot sometimes." Adam breathed as he leaned in.

My eyes fluttered shut as his lips brushed against mine.

He seemed uncertain, even nervous, at first, but when I leaned into the contact, into him, and he melted right into it.

He leaned back eventually, leaving me chasing his lips for a second, before my eyes slowly opened to his amused expression.

The first thing I blurted out was,

"Well that went a lot better than expected."

Adam snorted and began chuckling, as I fervently tried to reword my thoughts.

"Wait-no. That's not what I meant. I was just trying to annoy you and distract you from the Monopoly game so that I could win, but I didn't think you would actually kiss me! Not that I didn't like it, quite the opposite in fact. Look what I'm trying to say is-"

"James, don't worry, I know what you meant." Adam said with a small smile still gracing his face.

"I think it's time to go to sleep now," he continued, "you get chatty when you're tired."

"Yea, that might be a good idea."

I hadn't planned on staying the night at Adam's house. I didn't have anything I needed, like pants other than jeans or even a toothbrush.

Adam loaned me some sweatpants that most definitely didn't go over my ankles, and an extra unopened toothbrush.

I insisted on taking the couch, seeing as I was crashing at his house on such short notice, but he persuaded me to take the bed with him, using the excuse that the couch was far too firm for my delicate back (or something along those lines.)

I passed out right when my head hit the pillow.

Waking up to mostly unfamiliar surroundings after passing out for an extended amount of time is jarring.

Especially when you don't expect to see someone cuddled up against you with no idea how you got there.

I tried to desperately recall what events had happened the night before, my brain not being great at remembering things when I was exhausted.

It all came rushing back after a moment.

The teasing, then the flirting, and finally, the kiss.

Adam kissed me.

I felt like crying. For multiple reasons.

I had finally, finally gotten to kiss Adam, after what felt like years of wanting and waiting, and then it just happened when I was being an annoying brat.

Adam stirring on me brought me out of my thoughts. His eyes slowly blinked open, as he looked at me and lazily smiled.

"Hey." He mumbled, still sleep stricken.

"Hey." I replied, smiling softly at the adorable man in front of me.

"Can you kiss me again?" He barely whispered, "I wanna know if I'm still dreaming."

I snorted softly, and leaned down to set a soft peck on his lips.

Maybe last night wasn't too bad after all. I thought as I pulled Adam closer to me.
