"Hi, Ms. Harrison, I know you don't want to see me anymore but I need you to sign a couple more papers." I looked up from the paperwork on my desk, seeing my lawyer standing in the middle of my office, a soft smile on his chubby face. If you just looked at him, you wouldn't think he was the best lawyer there is. But, he was and I made sure he was my lawyer, for everything.
"I never get tired of seeing your face, Daniel," I said with a smile and motioned for him to move further into the office.
"I'm glad to hear that." He smiled, showing off his dimple then placed a short stack of papers on top of the ones already on my desk. "This is just papers basically stating that you are now full owner of the company and everything like that. Also, papers to banish the two from the premises and a restraining order like you asked. I read over it multiple times. But, you can read it if you'd like." I like to say I trusted Daniel, as he never did something to make me not trust him, but I trusted Tommy among other people —mainly men, unfortunately— and look where I'm at now.
"When do you need these papers in?" I asked looking them over briefly before looking back at Daniel.
"As soon as you can." I nodded, setting them to the side.
"While I have you here, I need to ask you a question." Daniel nodded, sitting in the chair across from me. "Do you happen to know anything about immigration law?" Daniel tilted his head to the side before adjusting his blazer.
"If I'm not mistaken, you were born in Albany, Bili." I rolled my eyes.
"Obviously, I'm not interested in the law for myself personally." Daniel nodded slowly. "My... I don't know what to call him. I mean, technically, we never broke up, so my boyfriend was born in Japan but came here on a student visa once that was up, he got a work visa and was working here. He was trying to become a permanent citizen but shit happened and he left with me to go to Japan and he missed his test." Daniel was silent for a second then motioned for me to continue.
"Long story short, they took him because his visa was up and they're trying to deport him."
"And you want to keep him here, am I right?"
"Yes. I really love him. And I can't do the long-distance thing." I said much like a brat. Daniel shifted in his seat then shrugged.
"Well, you wanna year what the most rational thought is?"
"Yes. Which is why I asked you." I snapped but Daniel didn't take it to heart, sitting forward in his seat as a way to get closer to me.
"I think, you two should get married. You're an American citizen and automatically, it would make him eligible for a green card. As long as you two stay married, he'll stay in America."
"So, he has a shot?" I asked as I slowly came to terms with what he was explaining.
Daniel nodded slowly. "But, the problem is, you said he's already in a detention center, right?" I nodded. "Well, they're not going to care about you two getting married now. It's too late. They'd think that you two were only getting married to keep him here." I pouted.
"Is there another way, Daniel? Please? I can't lose him." I said as tears started to build up in my eyes.
He sighed. "The only sane and legal way is to make it official is to fight. You can go testify on his behalf. Tell them how much you love him and how it would affect your family. Tell the judge that you want to get married and were planning on it but plans were messed up due to error and some unforeseen and unfortunate issues. You got to make the judge believe that taking him away from you would tear you apart. Or you can go the boss route, tell the judge how much of a hard worker he was and all the other junk."
"The boss route wouldn't work. I fucked him too many times in the open and I'm pregnant with his child." I said softly.
"Whatever you do, do what you're comfortable with. Worst-case scenario, if he is deported, you can visit him in Japan, and so can your child." I nodded slowly, wiping the tears that fell down my face without my permission. This was a lost cause.
Anything I do, would and could possibly destroy everything he worked hard for. "If he is deported, can he ever try to come back here?" I asked brokenly, afraid of the answer.
"It depends. Did Xing have a criminal past?"
"Not that I know of," I answered, truthfully.
"Well, things are looking up for him in that department. But, I don't want you to get your hopes up." I let out a disappointed sigh. "Does he have a lawyer?"
"I'm not sure. He told me to give him a week and he'll be on it but," I shrugged. "Nothing yet." I whispered. Daniel nodded.
"What's his name?" He asked, pulling his phone out.
"You're going to help him?" I asked.
"I'll see what I can do. I have friends who specialize in immigration laws, I'm sure they can help him a lot better than I ever can."
"Thank you," Daniel forced a smile onto his face before asking me his name again and I told him immediately. He typed it in, telling me he'd contact me if and when he hears something. He also reminded me to finish filling out the papers he gave me then left just as quick as that.
I sat and stared at the office door for a couple of minutes before I was knocked back into reality when my phone rang. I looked over and saw an unknown number and that only meant one thing in my book, it had to be Xing. A genuine smile grew on my face before I slid over the button to answer the phone. I let out a shaky breath. "Hi," I whispered.
"I love you," he told me right away, taking me back for a second.
"I love you too, Xing. Are you okay?"
"I go court in a couple and I want to tell you I love before I go." I felt my breathing hitch.
"I thought you had more time," I whined.
"I know. I know. I thought too. But they call my name and it mean court." All the sound on the phone silenced for a bit until I heard his deep breathing. "If I no call you back, things go wrong and I need you stay strong for me and baby."
"Xing!" I yelled into the phone as tears slid down my cheeks.
"I know. I sorry. I love you. I love you. I got go." and he hung up. I put my head down, trying to ignore the stinging feeling in my heart right now.
"I love you too." I muttered to no one in particular.
I lied, next chapter will be the last one. Then the epilogue. Sorry for the abrupt change but I want to end this book earlier cause if I don't finish it soon, idk when I'd be able to finish. Sorry y'all. I did want to prolong it more but things are looking a little cooky and weird. I might publish some bonus chapters later but idk. We'll see.
And with that being said, don't forget to add under the influence to your library and then look out for overtime and that's going to be another bwwm book. It's been a minute since i wrote one and it's due that I write one more now. I missed my white men, lol.
(overtime isn't published on my page yet, just look out for it, by the time this book ends, the epigraph and synopsis should be up)
<under the influence will also be a lot different than what it was supposed to be. I won't clarify why yet, just, when you read it, you'll understand>
