Later on at dinner they all sat at the dining room table. Emma's mother sat at the head in her wheelchair then Emma on the left and Logan at the right with Evan next to Logan.
"I'm so glad your home baby I've missed you so much with you being in New York City for so long. I hate to think that it's only because I'm sick that you come home." Her mother said.
"Oh mom I didn't come home just because you're sick. I was getting lonely in the city and needed to come home. I know how much of a hassle Logan here can be." Emma said as she kicked her brother from under the table giving him a look not to say anything about Pete to their mother. "How are your treatments going mom?" she asked taking her mother's frail hand in her own.
"Let's not talk about it at dinner dear. There is no reason to spoil a good meal." Her mother said patting her daughters hand then went back to eating her dinner.
They spent the rest of the meal talking about Logan grades at school, Emma's time in England, and different things that had been going on. But not one word about her break up with Pete. When they ran out of things to talk about they ate in silence. When they were done eating the boys cleared the table and loaded the dishwasher.
Emma took her mother back up to her room where they talked about what was going to happen when her mother left them.
"The doctor says its terminal. When I die Emma you will be all he has left. The house is paid off and you both have your trust funds. The life insurance from your father will make sure you never want for anything. Mine will just add to it. I want you to stay in this house keep it going don't move. Promise me that you will not sell the house Emma I want you to promise me. I want you take care of Logan in this house. I'm leaving the house to you and Logan I'm leaving you both everything I have split down the middle for you both to share. It's all listed in the trust." She said looking her daughter in the eyes.
"I promise mom I won't sell the house. Logan and I will take care of it. I will take care of Logan no matter what mom I promise. How long does the doctor say you have left?" she asked taking her mother's hand in her own.
"Not very long the end of the month at most. He says that the cancer has spread from my liver to my bladder and lungs. I love you both dearly. I have written you both a letter; they are with the trust documents for you both to read after I have passed. Logan has his written drivers test on Monday I need you to take him and teach him to drive." Her mother looked so frail laying in the bed her and her father used to share. The bed seemed to sallow her whole.
"I will mom. You need to rest; I'll check on you in the morning. Good night mom I love you." Emma bent over her mother and kissed her on the forehead then left the room and shut the door. As Emma left the room her mother watched her leave and for the second time she knew that deep down inside her daughter was hurt from something her childhood friend Taylor had done.
