The Void: Frozen Threat

Cold Winds

As the three of us trudge through the freezing winds and heavy snow we venture farther into the unknown town.

I watch as we pass cars buried in snow and ice and we pass by a house which must have burnt down awhile ago because the blackened wood was now covered in snow and ice as well as most of the houses around it. It was like looking at a winter wonderland from out of a fantasy movie but the only thing different was it was freezing cold and we had no way to protect ourselves because most of the houses would have no way to be warm without power.

I waved them over to where I stood behind a bus which was also covered in snow and ice. All I could think was at least we were out of the wind for now until the direction of it went back at us then we would be screwed.

"This wind is insane!" One yells over the wind and I still could barely here him Alex looked like he was just as cold as me because he was shaking even though we all had heavy coats on.

"Let's head to that house it's our only shot at not being frozen to death!" I start to sprint as much as I can to one of the houses nearby but I stop dead in my tracks when I hear a howl from behind us.

"Run it's wolves!" One shouts from behind me and I lunge forward faster and grab the door and struggle to open it and I finally give up and use my shoulder and ram the door sending it flying open.

As I hold the door for them I feel pain shooting through my elbow knowing I had done something to it when I hit the door. I slam the door shut when Alex gets in and I sit against it making sure it stays shut.

"Holy shit...." One collapses on the ground breathing heavily and Alex leans on the wall to catch his breath.

"My arm...I think I might have broke it" I couldn't move my arm and I was out of breath so I stopped talking trying to catch my breath.

I look up seeing we all look exhausted from being out in the freezing cold winds and for the first time in awhile I want to just close my eyes and sleep in this unsafe location. I knew I couldn't do that so I stood up thinking of a way out of this mess. The problem was is we had few options and all of them results in a chance of dying. 

"What should we do?" Alex looks at me with a exhausted expression.

"We could either stay here and secure a room to rest up and hope this storm dies down and we can leave or we could risk a chance outside with the wolves and the freezing wind" I look at both of them and I then look at my arm seeing it hanging limply next to my side.

"I vote we stay here One is in no condition to travel and your arm is banged up pretty bad" Alex defends One and I know that he is right because One is practically passed out already and my arm feel as if it were completely numb almost as if it weren't there.

"Get him I'll secure a room upstairs because that door is broken and it won't hold back anything" I head towards the stairs and I feel my eyes starting to become heavy with exhaustion but I push myself to continue for my people.

---Beta's Squad Location: Suburbs---

"Beta there are infected out front" Mark the man who came with Gamma's old group walks up to me and I nod.

"If there are alot of them tell everyone to quietly move to the back room leave the side room for Rainy and Me seeming she should have more space" I watch as he nods and walks back down the hallway.

I look through my bag till I pull out my water bottle and take a drink feeling a bit better than I had for quite some time. I then shift through the many items I brought for my own sake and for survival until I grip a tiny box and open it seeing all my most treasured belongings even a photo of my family who were most likely all gone and if they weren't they were probably going to die without me ever seeing them again.

I quickly put away my belongings when the people in my group walk past me and head towards the back room except for Rainy who is already in her room where I would be sleeping too, just in case something were to happen because the place we chose wasn't really secure at all.

I sit in silence and after awhile I pull out my radio and click it on wanting to hear someone's voice.

"Alpha you there?" I talk into the radio and only static comes back and I sigh. As I'm reaching to put my radio away a voice talks into the radio and It wasn't Alpha at all but Grant the medic and this made me worry for Alpha even more.

"Beta we need backup....infected.....people.....turning....Alpha sick.....hurry!" The radio crackled with static and I listened to the noise of gunfire and people screaming for help. I quickly turned the radio off and started to cry into my hands knowing that they needed help and I couldn't help them.

"Holy shit....." I look up seeing Mark and his face is in utter shock and he looks like he wants to puke at the sounds I he must have heard.

"I'm going to help them" I stand up and sling my bag over my back and head towards the door but a and grabs my shoulder and I turn to see Mark shaking his head.

"You are going to need backup" Mark looks at me and I nod slowly rethinking my plan.

"One other person can come with me but I need you here your gonna have to watch over everyone.....get me Nick he has experience with a gun and he could be useful" Mark nods and disappears reappearing with Nick in a matter of a minute and I can see Nick looks ready as he carries his gun and backpack.

"Let's go save our home" I lead Nick out the front door towards the one car we had taken to get here and I get in starting to it right away and speeding down the road heading towards our home with Nick beside me.

---Beta P.O.V 30 minutes later---

I run towards the cave but I stop at the base of the slope as Grant comes out of the bushes and I'm shocked to see him covered in blood and he is limping.

"There are still 5 men up there but they can't hold them for long...those things are different they aren't normal infected....we think its a mutated strain that comes with the new flu" He starts coughing and he falls down and sits next to a tree and I become concerned.

"Don't look at me like that....I'm sick as well....but I'm going to be fine I have to help the injured" Grant coughs violently till he coughs up blood and I turn away with a nod running up the hill with Nick in tow he also looks as scared as I am.

"Hold them we can't let them get past us!" Delta, one of the squad leaders shouts and 4 men stand infront of him firing into the oncoming infected who all look different then normal infected and I look closer seeing something horrifying. 

All of them had bloodshot eyes and they had long sharp nails and they sounded like they were growling like rabid animals an it scared me into shock enough that I didn't see Delta walk up to me.

"Beta I didn't think you would come back..." He looked exhausted and he looked to be sick to as he was pale and sweating.

"Well I came to help take back our home" I took position next to one of the 4 men and started to unload clip after clip into the oncoming horde.

I began to notice they weren't stopping only a few had seized to move and lay on the ground and there were still at least five to ten standing it was hard to see with the shadow hiding the ones behind the first line. I began to become weak with exhaustion but soon I noticed fewer were standing and finally the last one collapsed only a couple feet from us and I wiped the little drops of sweat on my forehead.

"We did it!" Nick jumps with joy and multiple people join in pumping there fist with victory.

"We got it from here go pay everyone a visit and tell them we won" Delta motioned down the hill and I went without protesting because I wanted to be away from all the fighting for awhile.

Once I arrived at the bottom of the hill I moved the bush to the side and gasped in horror at what I saw.
