I fall face first on the hard gravel at the entrance of our High School gates. My first day in High School has barely started and I'm already making a fool of myself.
Freshman year; the beginning of a new chapter if I can ever push the embarrassment away long enough to stand back up.
I finally scurry to my feet I smile but I notice a pair of familiar black heavily worn converse.
I sigh in relief when I look up to find his attractive model face staring down at me. Pure eyes, a sweet smile and soft hands stretched out in front of him; patiently waiting for me to take hold of. A huge cat like grin emerges on my face and I erupt into laughter gladly grabbing Chases hand to help myself up.
"I leave you for ten minuets and you've already hit the deck."
The sound of his laughter is like music to my ears. I long to hear it as often as I possibly can. I shove the boy playfully, "well then it's settled, you can't leave my side for the rest of the school year. Look what happens when you're gone."
I take his arm as we walk into the new building, "deal" he nods then eyes me knowingly.
"But you do know for a dancer you're very clumsy."
I roll my eyes at him the memory of our first interaction still fresh in my mind. After my dad left Chase and his family became my safety blanket, and I know as long as I have him by my side, helping me back to my feet I will be just fine. While we stand at our lockers waiting for the first bell to ring we make promises to each other; a promise of a forever friendship, promises to meet for lunch every single day, spend all weekend together and, above all to never let High School to come between us."
Are we just naive to believe that this new Chapter of our lives that s High School. The most ever changing time of our lives won't change us?
I have to hold onto that hope, or I'll never make it through the first day. I plant a soft kiss on Chases sculptured cheek, my lips brushing along his prominent cheek bone. I stop as I pull away catching a glimpse of his now reddened face, then it dawns on me, we don't do this.
With the unusual departure we say awkward goodbyes and I hurry to my first period, relieved that he isn't in my Math class.
I take my seat in the middle of the classroom, I love school but Math is not my favourite so I choose the seat near to the door so I can have a swift getaway when the class ends.A short stout woman stands at the front of the classroom, Ms Wellings; she introduced herself as, with emphasis on the 'Ms.' She scans the room.
"I know Math is rarely a hot topic for most students, but by the end of the year I'm sure it will be," she laughs to herself.
"Look, I know this is all new to you," she says to a highly energetic class of Freshman.
"I know this is exciting and scary. This new chapter in your young lives. "
She smiles fondly at us.
"I want to give you all the best opportunity to succeed," she's a sweetheart.
"Classes are more intense and the closer we get to Senior the more intense they'll become. Therefore, I'll be preparing you for that from the start." A couple of groans make her chuckle, "I'm going to share the most important lesson I've ever been taught, when I was just a freshman myself-"
"You're barely twenty one right miss?"
A fair haired boy with caramel eyes calls from the back, smooth.
She looks at him and smiles, "oh you're going to be trouble young man."
She laughs at his remark and proceeds, "From this day on..."
She eyes the classroom carefully, "you are evolving, growing and nothing in your life from this day on will ever be the same, it's an ever changing process."
She sighs, "I urge you all to grab every opportunity thrown your way, keep pushing, keep dreaming. Work hard and enjoy your new experience. Make your High School experience count. Believe me it doesn't last forever."
A few moments of silence linger in the room after our teachers philosophical speech. Each of us clearly taking a moment to think about what every word meant.
"Okay now on with the lesson, but first introductions." One bye one a student stands up, saying their name, and what they're most looking forward to.
When it's my turn I know exactly what I'm going to say,
"I'm Ally Mae Benson, and I'm most excited to be cheer captain."
