CHAPTER 2

A/N: So most of the time this will be in Tris's Point of View but sometimes I want to mix it up to Tobias, Uriah, Christina, and Marlene's POV. I do not own any characters they are all Veronica Roth's

   (Tris's POV)

Once I get to school I see all my friends gathered around a small tree. Freshman year we had always stood by that tree in the mornings, waiting for school to start. Good memories flood my mind. I smile as I walk up to my friends.

"Hey, Tris, long time no see!" Christina runs up and hugs me tightly. I can't help but wince when she squeezes too hard. No one seems to have noticed.

"So guys, I got good news! Great news actually! Me and Will are...dating!" She squeals as she jumps up and down.

We all congratulate her and Will.

"So how was summer?" Christina asks.

Uriah was the first to answer, "It was awesome! Me and Zeke went to a lake house and went cliff diving! Dauntless, huh?"

Dauntless is the word we use for something brave. We all nod and each share something we did over summer break. Marlene went to the beach with her family; Lynn got a car; and Shauana, her sister, got a job. When it comes to my turn I stare down at my feet and try desperately to think of something happy that happened over the summer. There is nothing I can think of.

"I got it!" I hear someone yell behind me. All of a sudden I am laying with my back pressed against the ground. What's going on?! Someone is laying on top of me so I can't get up. I look over to see if I know who it is and realize that a boy, probably a junior, must have fallen and landed on me. Ugh, this is embarrassing! The boy's face is inches— no, actually centimeters away from mine. He must have fallen face first apparently. After slowly getting up and dusting off he helps me up. I am still a little stunned from what just happened.

"Sorry about that. Mind handing me that football?" The boy said. His eyes are dark blue and he has brown hair. I just stand there looking at him. He is so...handsome.

"Please?" He asks politely.

"Huh? Oh, sorry. Here." I bend down to get the football and hand it to him.

"Thanks. By the way, my name is Four." He says.

Four? Strange name. It's probably just a nickname I think to myself. He walks away back towards a group of guys. A tall girl runs over to him and kisses him. I know I'm staring at him still, but how could anyone take their eyes off him? I sigh and then realize that Christina is shaking me.

"Tris! Hey, Tris? You in there?" She waves her hand in front of my face. I nod and look back to my group. They are all staring at me.

"What? My hair messed up?" I ask, laughing a little.

"Tris, are you okay? You just got ran over by Four, the school's quarterback. Do we need to take you to the nurse or something?" Uriah says. He is usually the type to joke around, but his face looks stern and serious.

"Guys, no worries, I am fine. Um, does anyone else have Geometry first class? Because I have no idea where room B214 is." I need to change the subject. I can't go to the nurse. She would ask why I have all these bruises and cuts and I'm not about to tell anyone about me and my brother. The thought of him made me look around the school parking lot for his jeep. He drives the red jeep parked towards the front.

"Yeah, I got that class, we better head inside. It's like three minutes left till bell rings." Marlene says. I follow her inside the junior/sophomore building. We have four buildings on campus: the freshman, junior/sophomore, senior, and the big building used as a gym and cafeteria. The halls are lined with lockers so it takes a minute to find mine— number 314. Christina's locker is to my right and one locker separates Marlene's and mine. Will and Uriah are farther down the hall.

We head into Geometry class and find seats next to the windows. Mrs. Hoover walks in and begins a presentation on Geometric shapes. I zone out and look out the window. From here I have a perfect view of our meeting tree. Marlene taps me lightly on the shoulder and passes me a note. In scribbly handwriting it says, "What class do you have next?"

I pick up a pencil and write out in cursive, "Gym."

Yesterday I packed gym clothes just in case and now I am glad that I did. Marlene writes back on the note, "Aw, I have chemistry."

I wonder who has gym with me: maybe Christina and Lynn, maybe Four. Wait, Four? Why am I thinking about Four? I just met him today! I clear my mind and try to listen to what Mrs. Hoover is saying, but every so often I start to think about Four. Before I know it the bell rings, signaling that first block is over.

Marlene and I walk out of the classroom and down to our lockers. The one locker that separates Marlene's locker and mine is closed. That's when I see Four. He opens the locker next to mine and puts his books inside. He looks over to me, "Hey, I didn't get your name this morning. Sorry about that, didn't mean to run into you."

"Uh, I am Tris." I answer quietly.

"Well, nice to meet you, Tris." He says over his shoulder as he walks away. I see Marlene out of the corner of my eye looking at me. She walks over and gleefully says, "You like Four!"

"What? No! Uh, he has a girlfriend...you know, what's her name." I know I'm talking fast but I can't seem to slow my words.

"You're lying, Tris, you bite the inside of your cheek when you lie. Her name is Lauren. She is the cheerleading captain. Four's the quarterback, she's the cheer captain so it's like they have to date. Except Lauren is a total..." Marlene is interrupted by Uriah who comes and hugs her from behind.

"Whatcha talking about?" He asks, letting Marlene go. "Oh, do either of you have gym next?" He asks, suddenly veering off subject.

"Yeah, I do. We were just talking about stuff." I tell him.

He raises his eyebrows and smiles at me. He looks so funny I can't help but laugh. We says goodbye to Marlene and walks over to the gym building.

Uriah and I walk into the giant gymnasium. I go over to the girls' dressing rooms. When I walk in the room Christina is standing there, putting her hair in a pony tail.

"Hey! Mind handing me those tennis shoes?" She asks as I walk by. I do as she requests. Without thinking I start to take my leather jacket off. My arms are blue and purple with bruises. I hate Caleb. I take the jacket all the way off and Christina turns around. Her eyes grow about ten times bigger when she sees me. "Tris! OMG! What happened? That's not from this morning is it?!" She is staring and I don't like it. To keep her from staring at my arms I turn around, keeping my back to her as I change shirts.

"Your back! It's scratched like everywhere! Are you okay?" She gasps.

I nod and look over at her as I finish changing. "Christina, please don't tell anyone about my bruises and scratches. Please." I beg.

"That tee shirt shows them on your arms, but your back is covered. How did this happen?"

I want to tell her all about my evil brother, but if he finds out that I told someone he would beat me until I couldn't move. He might even kill me.

I ignore her question and walk out of the dressing room. Standing near the basketball court is the devil himself.
