CHAPTER 12

(Four's POV)

It's almost ten o'clock when my phone starts vibrating. I want to stay asleep, but my phone won't stop buzzing.

Ugh.

I pick it up and check my messages. There is one from Tris, my girlfriend.

I open the message and it read, "Hey I need to talk to you".

I begin to worry. What does she want to talk about at ten at night? Is Tris okay? Is she going to break up with me? No, that's ridiculous. We have been dating for less than a day, how can she break up with me? We have prom plans!

ME: Ya? Want me to come over?

TRIS: I would like that

ME: open ur window and I can

TRIS: not at home remember that tree I showed u 2day?

ME: ya

TRIS: staying the night here

ME: ok b there soon love u

TRIS: love u

I roll out of my bed. Tonight I am so tired I just went to sleep in the jeans I had worn today. I put on a black tee shirt.

I am still sleepy as I walk down the stairs to go tell my father where I am going. He is in his study looking at a bunch of books.

"Hey, Dad, I am going to visit a friend." I say standing in the doorway.

"I don't care, Tobias, go do what ever you are going to do. What did I tell you about disturbing me when I am working?" My father doesn't even look up from his books.
I shrug it off, but if he doesn't care who does?

I get the keys to Annabelle as I walk out the door. The cold night air stings my skin, making me pull the jacket closer around me. I get into my car and start to drive to the little playground. In about five minutes I pull into the small parking lot.

The playground is deserted, with only the leaves rolling across the ground. The two vacant swings rock back and forth, being pushed by the invisible wind. I go straight up to the edge of the forest. I look up at the beautiful sky; not even one star is out. Clouds hide everything in the sky except a small patch of light from the moon.

I start walking, still looking up towards the top of the tree line. I imagine Tris somewhere up there hanging from a branch. All is quiet except for the crunch of the grass and leaves beneath my feet. I can see the base of the giant tree Tris had showed me at lunch, its giant branches hanging low and growing thicker the farther they go up.

I hear the sound of a twig snap from above and a few leaves fall down in front of me. I look up and I think I saw something move quickly up in the trees. "Hello, Tris." I whisper mostly to myself.

It is quiet now and I notice my hands are sweaty. I know my body recognized the fear before I did. I hate heights, but for Tris I will get over it. I begin climbing, pulling myself up from branch to branch. I move slowly, planing each move before I do the act. It feels like forever had passed when I get up onto the giant tree branch that Tris had showed me earlier.

When I get up I see a small blonde girl sitting with her legs up against her chest, her small, slim arms wrapped around her legs. Tris. She is beautiful, but at the moment looks smaller than usual. Her voice is quiet and barely breaks the silence, "Hey."

"Hey. You okay?" I ask, looking over at her.

"Caleb beat me tonight, but I am okay. I've had worse." The moment she mentions Caleb I am disgusted. Why would he do this to his own sister? How long had he done this to her? I'm about to ask, but she cuts me off. "I dreamed about you."
