(Hi so this is the first story I have ever written on Wattpad so sorry if it is kinda crapy. I absolutely loved the Divergent Series and I wanted to write my ideas on what life would be like in high school. This story has no factions but some cliques are similar to the factions. Also, in the original book by Veronica Roth Marcus beats Tobias. In this version I switched it to where Caleb beats Tris and her mother doesn't care. The personalities of characters in this story may be different. Thanks. Oh, and I don't own any characters used in this story, they belong to Veronica Roth)

CHAPTER 1

(Tris POV)

I wake up to the sound of my bedroom door slamming open and loud footsteps approaching my bed. I sigh, knowing my brother is probably in a bad mood and needs to punch something— that something is me. Caleb stands over me and slaps me hard. I cup my hurt cheek as he pushes me out of bed, so I am now laying on the floor. Pain flows through my body as he kicks my back and stomach. It hurts to breathe. Then the kicking stops and Caleb walks away. Before leaving he says, "Next time get up on time! I just hate having to come wake you up." He added emphasis on the word hate.

I didn't care about what he was saying, I just laid on the floor telling myself to breath in and out. Once I felt like I could move, I sat up and looked out into the hall. I could see my brother sitting on the floor of his room playing a video game. My parents were downstairs.

My mother doesn't care about me— she tells me that almost every day; my father does nothing. He never speaks to me and is at work from five in the morning until twelve at night. My life is awful.

The bathroom door is open so I quickly run in and close the door. Out of habit I lock it. I take a quick shower, not because I want to hurry, but because when the water hits my scratches it stings.

Today is the first day of my sophomore year of high school. There is one problem: Caleb is a junior and at our school, and the sophomore and junior classes are combined. "Oh well.", I think, "Let's get this over with."

I dress in a black tee shirt with skinny jeans and black combat boots before looking into the mirror. I am Tris Prior: the short, skinny, blonde girl that when she gets home is beaten by her brother— but nobody knows that. My arms are covered in bruises so I put on a leather jacket to cover them. No one knows about my home life, not even my best friends. My watch beeps and I see that it is time to leave. I slowly walk to the door and peek out to see if Caleb was still around. My brother notices me and he starts to get up. Uh oh. I quickly shut my door and run to the window.

A giant tree separates my house and our new neighbor's house. I climb out onto the branch and begin to climb down. I don't want another beating or to listen to my mother tell me how useless I am. I put my red backpack across both shoulders and start to run. I don't care if I look stupid, I just need to get away from my family. I can't wait to get out of this house and leave this family forever. I'm only fifteen so I can't drive myself to school yet so I run the whole way.

After about five minutes of running I slow to a walk. That should put a good distance between me and my brother. I'm out of breath and panting, but I'm almost there. "Only five more minutes." I tell myself. My lungs burn, but I don't stop. School is the one safe place in my life. Soon, very soon, I will make it to the only place I feel loved.
